Open Windows Media Player 11

How do you open Windows Media Player 11? It's not in the list of
programs. I sometimes want to edit my playlists offline, or help
someone get started with using WMP11. Thanks.

Odd, I thought a shortcut was on the "All Programs" list by default.

Have you tried typing "wmplayer" in the "Run" pop-up?

You should be able to right click on the wmplayer.exe icon in the
"Program files\Windows Media Player" folder to create a shortcut.

RE: Open Windows Media Player 11

Neil,

You could make a shortcut to wmplayer.exe and put it wherever you would
like. Its in the Windows Media Player folder. You can find it easilly from
Start/SearchFiles and Folders and typing wmplayer.exe. Then right click it
and select Create Shortcut.

I thought so, too. But there is none.

That works.

That file is only in WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386, but it is for an
older version of WMP, so does not work. There must be another exe file
for WMP11 in Program files\Windows Media Player, but which exe?

THAT might be an indication of why the shortcut isn't in your "Start"
button list. If some version of the wmplayer.exe file isn't in the
"Program Files\Windows Media Player" folder, there's a good chance the
media player isn't even installed on the computer. While logged on with
an administrator account open the "Add or Remove Programs" Control Panel
Applet, click "Add/Remove Windows Components" in the left pane and in
the "Windows Components Wizard" check "Windows Media Player". Then
complete the Wizard.

My system shows version 11.0.5721.5145 (WMP_11.061018-2006). If your
system doesn't show the wmplayer.exe version when you hover the pointer
over it you can right click the icon and view the version on the
properties pop-up.

If you end up with an earlier version you should be able to update it
with Windows Update in the Windows XP Help and Support Center.

Re: Open Windows Media Player 11

Neil,

In C:/Windows/Windows Media Player there should be a file named
"wmplayer.exe". That's the one you want. Doesn't that file show up there when
you do a Search for it?

You can also get there by using Start/Program Files/Accessories/Windows
Explorer. And then navigate to C:/Program Files/Windows Media Player and
clicking on Windows Media player in the left pane. Then search the right pane
for it.

Does that help?

It is -- WMP11 -- I use it every day, opening it from a dektop
shortcut that opens my playlist.

Than you can:

Right click on that shortcut and use "Properties" to identify which
executable it runs and what folder it's located in.

OR

While holding down the right mouse button drag the shortcut to the
"Start" menu and COPY it to the "All Programs" list. You can, if you
wish, right click on the copy and "Pin" the shortcut to the list that
appears above the "Start" button. You can rename the copy if you want to
get rid of a "Copy of " or "Shortcut to " that Windows sometimes adds to
the shortcut's name

Re: Open Windows Media Player 11

Neil,

I really can't say why "wmplayer.exe" isn't in the program. Maybe, that's
why it doesn't show up on your program list though. If I was having your
problem I'd consider uninstalling Windows Media Player, using Add/Remove
programs, and download and install a fresh copy from Microsoft's update site.
