When I try to schedule a task( like defrag and disk clean up)I get prompted
to enter a password. I have a home computer with my account as admin and
never set a password.
Do I need to create one just to schedule tasks?

It's not good security practices to run without a password. Even with a
password assigned to all accounts, XP can be set up to auto login to a
specific account. Again this isn't the best of security practices. That
said it can be done. See this.

if you just do not want to enter user name/password on logon then install TweakUI from MS and use the logon section to auto logon to the computer using the name/password you have created.

I set a password to my account with admin priv. Signed out and signed back
in. Ran the task scheduler wizard to set up disk defrag and when I type in
account name/password I get an error message that states "unable to establish
existence of the account specified"

Here's what I did:

1) Went to "Control Panel\User Accounts" and set a user name (eg.
'Jack2003') and a password for the 'Owner' account. The system now refers to
this user as 'Jack2003\Owner'.

2) Clicked 'Start\run'. Entered 'control userpasswords2'. Up popped a
dialog box. Unchecked the box labeled "Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer". Entered the user name 'Jack2003\Owner' and
the above password in the appropriate places. Clicked "Apply" and "OK".

3) Went to "Control Panel\Scheduled Tasks" to set the scheduled tasks using
the above user name and password.

It works!!!!!!!!!! The scheduled tasks run on schedule unattended and you
don't have to log on to use your computer!!! That is to say, the logon
happens automatically when you reboot or come out of standby. Amazing!!!!
