I can't figure how to get just the icons I want in the very bottom
task bar (just to right of Start button).

I can put a whole tool bar there (like Desktop), but I don't want
all of the icons there. I want a Desktop icon so I can get to desktop
from the bottom taskbar and some other icons.

How do I choose only what I want in that bar??

Right click over the taskbar and make sure it is unlocked. You may have to
slide the divider to see everything. Drag the icons into the taskbar.

It's called the Quick Launch bar. It's actually a toolbar. Normally it's
positioned on the taskbar to the right of Start but it can be dragged
anywhere you want. To enable it right click a blank area of the taskbar,
choose properties. On the taskbar tab make sure there is a checkmark in
Show Quick Launch. To get the icons arranged how you want, uncheck lock the
taskbar, then drag the icons to the Quick Launch tool bar and order them as
you want. You can drag the right vertical bar to the right to give more
room for the icons. When done go back and lock the taskbar.

You may want to do the following operation first. Rightclick the taskbar
and click "Toolbars>Quicklaunch". This will make available a space to drag
the programs into. If you do this you won't have to make sure the Toolbar
is unlocked.
