I've got a new occurance here. When I search for files on my computer, the
search will not stop. Instead it repeats searching the same directories,
thus preventing me from working with groups of files. If I click STOP, it
stops and then restarts, erasing my results. How can I correct this
behavior?

Try Reinstalling Search :
Click Start-Run and paste this:
"%windir%\Inf"
Right click "srchasst.inf" file and choose Install.
