I am running Win XP Pro. When I shut down the PC, it alternates text between
"Installing Update 1 of 1" and "Please do not unplug or shutdown your
computer." The PC spent 16 hours or so doing "Installing Update 1 of 1"
with no visible progress. Hwo can I fix it?

Restart it - log in as an administrator, visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scan for/install all CRITCAL
updates...

You do not necessarily need Internet Explorer 7.0, Media Player 11, etc. Do
not grab ANY hardware drivers from the site.
