Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

Did all the necessary DST updates on my XP and 2000 boxes and some of them
will still not keep time correctly. Any secrets to this mess?

Give me some more details about your network, and I may be able to

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

Nothing fancy. 2 2k domain controllers with 5 other member servers (all
SP4). All workstations are XP Pro SP2. DST updates have been applied to
all. Servers keep time correctly, but some workstations don't. Used tzedit
to see if the start/stop of DST was correct for the time zone on the problem
machines and it is.

What does the w32tm /tz command return on those borked machines? Run
the command at the Command Prompt.

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

It looks like the proper setings for the Eastern Time Zone. I would try
a third party solution on one machine to see if it fixes things at the
workstation/client level. I would suggest the Intelliadmin patch.

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

There are more reports of this problem appearing all over the place,
apparently Microsoft is "investigating" the problem. I can't suggest
anything concrete. I would start verifying things at the root of the
time service and work my way down. You might want to ask the folks here
and see what they have to say about it:

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

What I ultimately did was set the machine time back 2 hours and then let it
'catch up' on it's own an hour. Seems to be holding there that way, but
still not sure if this is a sure fix.

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

I would start at the Time Service Root (PDC Emulator) and work my way
down. Make sure that ONLY the PDCe synchronizes outside or to the
hardware clock and then make sure that the DC's and member servers
synchronize to the PDCe.

Ok, I set the only DC to be the SNTP master and it is set to sync it's clock
with ntp0.cornell.edu. How do I now force the workstations to sync with the
master?

Re: Freaking Machines STILL Not Keeping Correct Time

PS:

At a Command Prompt issue:

net stop w32time
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time

NOTE: Issue w32tm /unregister twice, as above. After issuing the
commands, in the registry the "Type" should be Nt5DS .

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\W32Time\Parameters

(REG_SZ) Value Name: Type
Value Data: Nt5DS
