| Disk space on system partition too low Hi My System / Boot (C:) partition is 8G, but over time has filled up to the point that there is only 130M free on it. This is no good :) I know that WinXP keeps copies of various service packs / patches, but can't remember where. The systems $TEMP is on another partition, and I suppose I could move the pagefile as well to free up some space, but I have the feeling that there are lots of redundant files. Could someone point me toward things that I can delete to free up some space? Thanks Rob |

A few off the top of my head: 1, Move the default location of My Music, My Pictures, Documents (you need a registry hack to do this). 2. Move the default location of your internet cache if you don't already clear it on exit (registry hack) or reduce its size. 3. Reduce the amount of space taken up by System Restore Post back if you want to do any of these and don't know how. |

You may be able to free up some space by moving and deleting things but you will always struggle for space until you bite the bullet and increase your system partition to 15 or 20 GBytes. Remember that disks are cheap! |

I also use Opera with its cache set up where I choose it to be. %SystemRoot%\Downloaded Installations and %SystemRoot%\ServicePackFiles are both fairly large and I suspect are rather useless, but I'm not eager to delete stuff and break my system. This thing was installed from an SP2 slipstream, so I'm not going to get lucky and discover SP2 laying around :( I know disks are cheap; must just be in my nature. I recall going through Windows 3.1 installs deleting stock bmps and help files... As I'm grabbing a new hdd next week the situation can easily be improved: the adjacent partition is for storage, so I could move everything out of it and expand the System partition, but I still don't like having junk laying around. You've been fortunate not to have run into more problems. The free space should not be allowed to go below 15-20%. For the 8GB drive that's 1.2 - 1.6 GB. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |
