| XP hangs I have just put in a new Liton DVD-RW drive in my old emachines. I am having this problem of XP hanging sometimes. For some reason while the screen is black and XP loads it most important files just before the boot screen it hangs. It power switches light stays on but when press goes off but the system is still on. I can hear the fans. I then have to take to power off. It sometimes does this and wont restart. I have modified the BIOS settings so that it does dont detect what koind of hardware is on the IDE buses. But still sometimes it does happen and takes longer to clear. Usually the only way to get windows to boot up is to have the DVD-RW drive tray open at the time of the boot and then windows continues but sometimes this does not work and i just do restart after restart and it evenutally boots up. I have a 1.2ghz Celeron, 381MB RAM, Intergrated Graphics. what could be the problem and how do i sort it out. I have also tried it with windows 2000 and it does the same thing. |

| Re: XP hangs firstly, it is really important that the device is properly connected and the bios/cmos registers it appropriately. if it does not, then no need to go further as there is an equipment malfunction. if it is registered by the cmos/bios then software is likely to be the cause of the problem. you may need to go to the website that manufacturers your dvd device and look up faq's or download any updates or patches. i did find a posting from a different server regarding a similar issue. a small portion of the thread is pasted below for you convenience. keep in mind that the info below is no gaurantee of your success. but i don't see what you have to loose by researching it with your machine: .. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- .. After searching everywhere, I ended up here. When I read (below) that this might work... I went into my registry and deleted the "Lower-filters" (didn't see an "Upper-filter") .... rebooted and VOILA! ... found my DVD-CD RW drive back. My registry showed 4 "currentcontrolset" files: currentcontrolset currentcontrolset001 currentcontrolset002 currentcontrolset003 I found the "lowerfilter" in currentcontrolset001 and currentcontrolset3: Start/Run/regedit Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Con trol\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Highlight the "upperFilters" and "LowerFilters" if any and go to edit-delete. I did the same in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet003\Con trol\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Thank you, Thank you, Thank you .... Regards, CATO .. .. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - db |

There are usually jumpers allowing the drive to be configured for Master, Slave or Cable Select; if it is set wrong, then there is a good chance for the computer to hang up. The setting depends on the way and where the DVD-RW drive is installed, i.e., is it the second drive on the same IDE connector as the hard drive or is it on its own IDE connector, etc. Read the manual. If problem persists, then the next things to check would be to make sure that everything is still seated firmly and properly. |

| Re: XP hangs Everything is setup correctly. The drive is fully working. I tested on 2 different PCs. Burns Cds and everything normally. I have tried two IDE cables and same problem with both. It is now on a Primary and Secondary Slave setup and the jumpers are set to CS ( Cable select) and the BIOS reads this and put the DVD-RW as the master as that is how it is connected. I have tried just the DVD-RW on the cable but does not make any improvements. I have updated the firmware today from Liteon's finally finished site but no change. So most likely software problem. I am currently trying the method in the one of the post obove. I will keep you posted. |

| Re: XP hangs ok. sometimes it is easier simply disconnecting the device from the mobo if you cannot access your registry to modify it. This would account for the "hang" time. The better configuration solutions are these: (a) Under Cable Select, the boot drive (i.e., the HD), in the first position and the DVD drive in the second position; (b) Using single IDE controller, the HD jumpered as Master and the DVD drive jumpered as Slave, on a standard IDE cable; or, (c) Using both primary and secondary IDE controllers, HD connected to the primary IDE controller while the DVD drive is connected to the secondary IDE controller, both jumpered accordingly. |

| Re: XP hangs I think i might have not made it clear. The HD is on the primary IDE channel as the master for that cable. On the secondary IDE channel (the second cable) there are 2 DVD drives. One is the DVD-RW which is the master and the other is a normal DVD-ROM drive which is set as slave. Through the BIOS at the moment the BIOS is told not to search for the drives and i have manually entered the settings that it needs. the settings are DMA and what kind of device it is. I think the problem lies within windows rather than the BIOS as i have tried many BIOS setting combonations. One problem is that thier may not be enough power getting to it t boot time. The computer is currently running at full capacity and no more spare slots are avalaible. what sort of symptoms would is see if the PSU could not handle the load or was faulty. |

| Re: XP hangs well, the psu could be a factor and they do make them at higher ratings now a days especially for adding more equipment. i suppose that if the dvd-rw worked perfectly while the dvd rom was disconnected, this would be a clue. and if the dvd-rom worked perfectly while the dvd rw was disconnected then this again would be a clue. however, if they are both connected and something isn't working then this is a clue as well. my pc has a dvd-rw and a cd-rw and they both worked great and without any extra effort on my part. but if i recall, the cd rw needed to be the boot/master and not the slave/secondary. but i am sure you tried switching their roles already. this brings up an interesting point, will you be able to boot your windows cd if you have 2 dvds readers instead? what you can probably do is to get a higher rating psu since they are pretty cheap. if it works then great if not then you can likely return it for credit or keep it. but my guess is that the on/off logic is affective for digital devices. in that, if the device cannot get the exact power it requires, then it will show as not connected by the o.s. - db "naza" <naza911@googlemail.com> wrote in message news:1173715794.973252.40020@n33g2000cwc.googlegro ups.com...
