outlook 2003 kills typing in cmd or cygwin shell windows

xp pro sp2, 2 gigs ram, system about a week old
Ms Office 2003 SP2, specifically outlook 2003 sp2 (11.8118.8122)

With outlook running (no email configured, I only use the journal and
calendar) echo speed in cmd windows is awful. There is a second or two delay
echoing each character I type. This is true in cygwin shell window also.

If I quit Outlook, both cmd and cygwin shell echo normally.

Does anyone know if there's an outlook setting to tweak to fix this?

Your first task must be to identify which task is eating up
your CPU time. It could be Outlook, it could be something
else. Launch the Task Manager and have a look under the
Processes tab.

Take this to an Office group. This group is for the OS.
