well, the light wouldn't lie

therefore there is some activity occurring.

the question is how do you know for sure
that there is no r/w occurring?

If I understand the question correctly, the hard drive LED should not
normally light up if there is neither a read/write operation involving
the disk platter or heads is in progress. But with some motherboards, it
would also not be unusual for the hard drive LED to flash whenever there
is any activity involving the IDE (and possibly SCSI or SATA) connections,
depending on the design of the circuitry. Why is the question being asked?
Searching for an answer to possible unscheduled or abnormal activity of
the computer?

Only hard drives I've ever seen that had a led directly attached to them
were scsi.

Believe your question is intentionally vague... So, my reply fits
specifically even if you meant something else.
