To reduce lag on a dial-up connection, ie: for multiplayer network

.... delete that cumbersome modem connection, and get a broadband line
instead.

You can't tweak a dial-up connection enough to make any difference in
on-line games (short of going from a 14.4K modem to a 56K).

There is an easier way, dump your dialup and go
to broadband.

Probably by adjusting some default-misconfigured networking parameters like
Default MTU and MSS, TCP Window, activating PMTUD, SACK, ... but I'd rather
choose a tool which is competent on doing so (like TCP Optimizer from
speedguide.net), or do it manually.

Indeed, a well-tuned connection cannot be speeded up any further.
