| 'Hover'option when moving mouse over certain icons and web links I have just bought a new laptop/notebook and find that when my mouse pointer is positioned over certain icons and web links these start without any 'click' on the mouse keys. I find this most annoying given MS's way of making new windows or links the active window. How can I turn this 'feature' off? I have not installed any other software such as tweakui which seems to be mentioned. thanks |

| Re: 'Hover'option when moving mouse over certain icons and web links Have the same issue here also and I've posted the same question with no response. I also just installed Windows Vista on my laptop and it still does the same thing... If your Windows was pre-installed, probably your best bet is to contact the PC manufacturer; perhaps it is some "tweak" they have enabled. If you do find out what's causing it, please do post back for the benefit of future victims :-) Good luck! -- Nightowl |

You are correct, this is not official MS support. Most everyone that posts here is a volunteer. Occasionally an MS employee will post here but on their own time. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

You can tell I am not impressed by MS's actions by providing defalts that apparently a nmber of people do not want and they do not provide an easy get out. OK whinge over, forthose that do not want to go where MS want us to go today here is the fix that seems to work for me. I first did a search in Regedit first and it did lead me to the advancedoptions in IE there seems to be an option UNDERLINE Links. I have checked the box NEVER. There may be more options that need to be changed but for my setup this has at least got me to a point were my PC is now acting the way I wat it to. good luck |

I'm very glad you solved the problem, Mitchell, and thanks for telling us what worked. Is this in IE7? I have the underline option checked in IE6 but that only affects URLs in web pages, not my icons on the desktop, and the links still have to be clicked. There *is* an option to underline desktop icons and/or use single-click to launch them in Explorer's Tools>Folder Options General tab but that doesn't make my PC do what yours was doing either. I'm wondering if it could be something to do with IE7? -- Nightowl |

I have noticed that sometimes I do get a link or folder opened but could possibly be more touchpad related, Certainly the immediate opening of URLs and desktop icons has been reduced to an extent that I can live with the occasional other 'features'. It is a new laptop so some issues may be related to just learning the new feel of the keyboard and touchpad. |

These are volunteer newsgroups. They have never been moderated (that I know of). Is it strange? I don't know the answer to that, but I don't see it as strange. Many vendors provide user groups that are not moderated. It's just the way it is. If you want MS help you call MS tech support. What I do dislike is if the vendor doesn't provide user groups. That is frustrating. There are separate newsgroups for Vista, and for Internet Explorer. Questions about IE7 should definitely go to the internet explorer newsgroup, independent of the OS. If only a few people have gotten this far then there much be a large percentage of users who do not want this option. Unfortunately it seems my fix was only temporary, and now I am suffering again. It is a rea shame that Microsoft are so arrogant that they do not feel the need to firstly offer assistance to the ordinary folk who are mere users and do not need to be experts. Secondly Microsoft are missing a great opportunity to improve their product based on the feedback of the real user base. Time to switch to Linux I think. |

There is official support provided, if you have a retail copy of the OS you can call Microsoft for support, if you have an OEM copy, call your PC vendor. Plain and simple. Seems that you have decided to blame your ignorance on someone else. If this minor issue leaves you so befuddled, I can only imagine the problems/adventure you will have with Linux. Have a wonderful trip. |

What I said was it is a shame that Microsoft do not appear to monitor these sort of questions for feedback and update their software accordingly. I have searched through the registry and whatever MS have decided to call this instant start option it is not a word in the English dictionary, I have searched for hover, instant, start, noclick, and many others and nothing is obvious. It seems that if you, with obviously more knowledge than I, cannot answer this apparently simple question that affects many of us ignorant users then please let us into the secrect. I hae installedLinux before, and the user forums are a lot more helpful than this. |

In reviewing the entire thread, it would appear that your initial difficulty is with the setup provided by the computer vendor. Why haven't you contacted them? The advice was given, and would provide the answer. The saying about leading a horse to water certainly holds true here. |

It does seem that this is one of the most unfriendly group of nerds out there. Perhaps if you had a life outside the virtual world you would understand a little more. |
