| Unable to get an office notebook's wireless network to access theInternet on a home network. Hello, I am having problems getting a new office Dell Inspirion laptop/notebook to work with the Internet on my tiny home network. It appears that the IT department preinstalled softwares and settings (some software settings can't be changed due to group policy (e.g., can't change XP's firewall settings and can't run LiveUpdate on Symantec AntiVirus) -- not surprised). I got its wireless network card to see my wireless access point (Linksys WAP v1.1 with WEP [yes, I know it is weak -- but that's all it has for security/encryption]) in its Windows XP Pro. SP2 (don't know if it has all updates). I was able to access other computers via their IP addresses (pings, Debian/Linux's Samba file sharing, telnet, and IE 6.0 SP2 with router's Web administration) on the home network (also an old Netgear RT311 connected to a Netgear DS108 hub). It appears to be a DNS issue because I can connect to Internet Web sites with their IP addresses, but not domain names like google.com, yahoo.com, etc. I even tried forcing IP addresses (no DHCP) for the wireless network card, gateway (192.168.0.1), DNS (192.168.0.1 since router has two DNS addresses), etc. No help/changes there either. Other computers, that use wireless, are fine with the Internet so it is just this laptop/notebook not connecting correctly to the Internet (DNS probably). Here is the detailed ipconfig /all (changed some values to remain more anonymous) with the default settings for the wireless network when it is connected to my home network: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : SomeHostName Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : somecompany.org Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : somecompany.org somewhere.anisp.com Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-B9-53-CB-B4 Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : somewhere.anisp.com Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-19-D2-48-AC-E7 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 208.67.222.222 209.244.0.4 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, March 01, 2007 10:33:31 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, March 04, 2007 10:33:31 PM Did I miss something? I am not a network expert, but I do have basic understandings of network (IPv4 only). Maybe it is something that IT department restricted? Somecompany.org seems incorrect and I can't find where this is stored even if I force wireless network to my IP addresses (192.168.0.1). I did notice Windows XP's log in has a list of different networks to connect to (e.g., connect to company's network if the notebook/laptop is at work; use (computer) outside of company's network).
