Installing Windows XP OEM on Virtual Machine 2007

A couple of weeks ago I upgraded my PC to Windows Vista Ultimate. Previously
it was running on an OEM version of Windows XP Professional which came with
my system.

I have just tried to install Windows XP under Virtual PC 2007, however it
will not accept the product key, which was always valid whenever I had to
reinstall XP on my PC.

Can anyone help?

If your windows was an OEM version your product key will only match with an
OEM installation disl.

I would guess you are using somebody elses windows CD, which was not an OEM
version.

I am definitely using the OEM disc that came with my PC (and which I have
installed from before with the product key I am using).

Was Vista an upgrade version and if so what OS was used as the qualifying
OS? If it was that OEM version of XP, then by the license it can't be
installed or run while that Vista version is installed.

Full version of Vista Ultimate, not an upgrade.

Ok then I don't know why you can't load it in VPC, sorry. You might want
to post to the VPC forum.

From the Web page, it looks like Virtual PC can emulate Windows XP by
itself, without you having to install anything. Isn't that how it is
supposed to work?

No. Virtual PC creates a "virtual machine" on your desktop, on which you
then need to install the OS of your choice. Virtual PC doesn't come with any
OS.....
