Welcome to the Windopz De-Pistification FAQette.

WoW that was a mouthful wasn't it boys and girls?!

Let me explain:

You bought vista crap from our sponsor micoshaft corporation
and you realize after hours of reboots and re-installs
that our sponsor micoshaft has taken the piss out of you. So you
decide that this vista Pista is not for you.
Now you want to de-install Pista but expee takes up even
more hours and all your driver
diskettes are mislaid/lost and application cds are fscked
because your dog has been shagging it for some time, etc, etc, etc.
Oh Smuck is me you cry out in vain as your PC craps out on you
leaving you with nothing despite you having paid truck loads of money.

Then light at the end of the tunnel appears in the form
of Linux. Now you get angry and use Linux in anger to recover
you data. RAAAAARRRrrrr... you growl through into the night
recovering data, learning GNU/Linux and by midnight all your
work is done, your computers are working, you learned many
things and Linux with Beryl is the king. You can sleep in peace
knowing Linux is your friend and share your dreams
with others...

That doesn't sound like a "difference" to me?

If you want to learn about real difference, read here:

That's true at both sucks.
gnome have less bugs as kde, but kde have more possibilities of settings.

As example, I will never use gnome because I just cannot configure the
mouse to work as I want it. And I don't use kde anymore because I don't
like to have to fight against undocumented features in order to get things
to work the way I like it.

It you want an outstanding wm with infinite and well documented features,
look for fvwm. If you want more as a wm, a DE (desktop environement), look
for fvwm-crystal.

If you have the patience to learn it (fvwm-crystal is
fvwm, but much more easier to learn because it just work from the first
run and have a modular configuration), I am sure at you will like it and
look at gnome and kde with a little smile on your face.

I know at the recent kde versions have less bugs such as memory leak. And
they are more usable as the older versions.

I used suse that use kde as default DE under many years, but I really
prefer gentoo now.

And I call an undocumented feature a bug. Example: the MIDI wrapper
configuration in kde control panel. What the f. is this? You have to
search in kmid files to find the answer!!! How a newbie can know that and
find the answer???!!!

I prefer to run kde and gnome applications on fvwm-crystal, because with
fvwm, i just can do whatever I want to do, when with other wm-de as gnome
and kde, I can only do, exactly as with window$, what they are thinking
at I want to do. And it is a huge difference between those 2 ways of
making things.

That said, kde is an outstanding wm for a linux newbie, much better as
window$.

My two cents:
It isn't really about whether they are good or not. It is about which
one "gets the job done". Both include a bunch of programs that make
normal Linux Admin tasks easier, so they can both get the job done.

I MUCH prefer KDE. It looks similar to Windows 98/XP/Server2003 and
hopping between Windows Clients and the Linux Server is quicker and
easier (for me) with KDE. But if someone has installed Ubuntu, you
don't just go installing KDE on top of it and mess up their system.
They are paying you to fix it, not break even more.

In terms of running a business, it is all about ROI (return on
investment), not preference. My "preference" is just my pride singing
sweet songs of snobbery. What is the quickest way I can get a Linux
server to add file shares, change an Apache configuration, modify the
php config, dink with MySQL, curse at Samba, etc?

Ironically, because of all the variety in windows managers, I end up
relying on emacs and modifying the configurations directly, or using
the specific distribution's custom configuration manager and using the
windows manager as a way to have multiple command prompts open on the
screen at the same time.

Just a rant from a Ventura Linux repair guy.
