| RE: How do I switch on my computer automatically? I don't mean to hijack this post, but I have a similar question too. I use Norton Ghost to create daily, incremental backups. I used to have my Power Options Properties set to "Turn Off Hard Drive After 20 Minutes Of Inactivity". But because Norton Ghost uses it's own "Scheduling Agent", I can no longer do that if I want the Ghost schedule to execute automatically. I must leave my hard drive set to "On". The Windows Task Scheduler will wake the computer, but the Ghost Agent will not. I've been looking for a good way to wake the hard drive so that Ghost will execute at the specified time. Any ideas? (I've asked Symantec for help. Their answer is You can't do that.) Milt "Frank Martin" wrote: > I want it to come on about 30min before I get > to work in the morning. > > Frank > > > |

If that options not available to you then check in the BIOS to see if it has that capability. It is not an XP OS issue, how could it be since the computer isn't running so the OS isn't. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

| Re: How do I switch on my computer automatically? Uncle Grumpy, Ive looked back at about your last 100 answers to peoples posts. You're not very knowledgeable, but I'll have to say you are well named. Thanks for trying to help though. | Re: How do I switch on my computer automatically? Rock, You're quite right. But I added my post to this thread because while Franks concern and mine are a little different, the same solution will apply to both of us. And while it's not a Windows "problem", I think that there may be a solution using Windows. I have looked and my BIOS does not offer any way to wake the machine on schedule. Thanks though, Milt "Rock" wrote: > "Frank Martin" <fm@general.com.au> wrote > >I want it to come on about 30min before I get to work in the morning. > > I have my secretary do it. However much you may think there may be a solution using Windows doesn't make it so. This is not an XP OS issue. There is no way to turn on a computer using the OS because, well, the OS isn't running. It's strictly an issue of capability in the BIOS and hardware. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

| Re: How do I switch on my computer automatically? Thanks for the comment Rock, I won't dispute what you're saying, but I do know that entires in the Windows Task Scheduler, such as my Norton Antivirus scheduled scan, do wake the computer. So will a .bat file such as: REM wakeup.bat REM 01/20/2007 REM simple program to do work to wake up the computer echo started at date >> wakeup.log But that's a clumsy way of doing it. I'm looking for a cleaner, simpler way. Milt "Rock" wrote: > "Milt" <Milt@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote > > > Rock, > > > > You're quite right. I thought the question was how to turn on the computer when it is turned off. That's different than how to wake it from hibernation or sleep. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

| Re: How do I switch on my computer automatically? Rock, Now I understand why you thought my question was "dumb". No, the computer is ON, but the hard drive is shut down. (".
