| "Change Preferences" option is missing in Search I just clean installed Windows XP Pro, to give my old PC to my Son. The Search window looks like Win98 (from memory). It was working fine before the reformat. All other windows look "normal" Can't find "change preferences" on Search. So, I can't find the window giving options to use it with or without animated screen characters. In help, it says you can change it to "classic" view (which I think this may be) but this option may not be available in all languages. It is set to English Australia, the same as it was before. I attempted to Google, all I can find is how to turn it the animated characters off. (I'd like to turn them on ) But in any case it all I can find everywhere I look is: "In the Search Companion dialog box, click Change Preferences.". That's the bit I can't find. What am I missing? -- Judy -- some quotes perceptive, some pedestrian, none mine :-) Outside of a dog, a book is your best friend, and inside of a dog, it's too dark to read. - (Groucho Marx) |

I couldn't find it under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ So did a search. Found two - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CabinetState Both said no, so I changed them to yes. This certainly fixed the problem. But I now wonder if what I did was overkill? I did another search just now, in order to copy the key and now found another two: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-682003330-1563985344-1202660629-1003\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-682003330-1563985344-1202660629-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\CabinetState I don't think they were there before. :-) Did I brake something while fixing it? -- Judy -- some quotes perceptive, some pedestrian, none mine :-) Men occasionally stumble on the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - (Sir Winston Churchill) |

Location #2 (CabinetState) is for Explorer. And HKEY_USERS\<your SID> is your user profile hive.
