| Windows XP and a crashed hard drive My hard drive crashed. How do I go about getting win XP installed on a new hard drive. Do I have to buy a new copy? or is there a way to transfer the license to the new hard drive Thanks John |

| Re: Windows XP and a crashed hard drive John; Simply install Windows on the new hard drive. Attempt internet activation. If internet activation fails, choose to activate by phone. Call Microsoft at the displayed number. Normally done in about 5 minutes. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "mrrizzo2u" <mrrizzo4u******.com> wrote in message news:6404C379-5344-4722-974B-0F205CA94B0D@microsoft.com... > My hard drive crashed. What, no backup? I bet you'll backup your system now! Try Acronis True Image www.acronis.com Good luck. BarryG |

| RE: Windows XP and a crashed hard drive is your old HD still usable? Some even after they have crashed, may not be bootable but can be set up as a secondary to get the data off, if so install XP on the new drive have the old one set up as a secondary, and copy the data off to the new drive. and a strong suggestion to consider some kind of backup for your data, either USB drive and or DVD burner. Then activation will either go through on the internet or in some cases you'll need to make a phone call. A copy of XP can be installed / activated as many times as needed/wanted on a given system. | Re: Windows XP and a crashed hard drive Jupiter Would it be helpful to suggest that the original hard disk is not left in the machine and that removable drives are disconnected until Windows XP is successfully installed on the new drive. We have had a number of users recently having problems with drive letters and not being able to change the system volume drive letter. Just a thought. -- Regards.
