I have 2 computers (HP and Gateway) both running XP Pro with all current
updates. The HP died yesterday. 99% sure it is the cpu or motherboard. I
switched drives with the Gateway so I could get some info from the drive or
just keep it in the Gateway. When I started to Gateway, it did the initial
startup routine, then the Norton GoBack screen came up. I let it pass
thinking there were no issues. After that screen the computer restarts and
keeps doing that. What can I do. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I assume that you tried to boot the Gateway PC with the HP
disk. This won't work. To get your information from the HP
disk, you must install it on the Gateway PC as a slave disk,
then boot up the Gateway PC with its own disk.

This would be a good time to think about your backup scheme.
It seems you haven't got one. All important files must be
backed up to an independent medium regularly, e.g. once
a week. Many people prefer to suffer a disaster before they
adopt such a scheme.

Thank you for your reply. I back up my drive every 1-2 weeks onto an
external drive, but there are a few things I have added in the past couple of
days i could use. Just for curiousity, why can't I just plug in the drive to
the Gateway? Where will the Outlook info be located on the drive? Thanks

I'm glad to hear that you back up your important files. Sometimes
I despair about how many posters consider this concept only
***after*** the event.

When you installed Windows on your HP, it tailored itself to
that particular hardware. The Gateway's hardware is quite different,
hence Windows won't work. You were lucky you got as far
as you did - in most cases Windows will report "Inaccessible
Boot Device" and curl up its toes.

If you're using Outlook, look for .PST files in the subfolders of
"C:\Documents and Settings". If it's Outlook Express, look for
..dbx files.
