Beep codes on boot up

I have an HP Pavilion 7905 model. Its about 5 or so years old, running XP
Pro. I turned on the computer today and got 4 single beeps. The monitor
says its in Power Save Mode. Activate Using PC. I powered up again and got a
different series of beeps. Wasn't expecting that so I don't remember the
beeps. Tried power again and got no beeps, including the POST single beep.
Monitor still says the same thing. I tried diferrent monitors, and different
video cards with the same results. Is my motherboard done? Any help will be
greatly appreciated. Thank you.

RE: Beep codes on boot up

I forgot to mention the power led on the monitor and tower both go green to
yellow after a minute or so.

RE: Beep codes on boot up

I finally duplicated the other beep pattern. 1-3-4-3 Test 512K base
memory. What does that mean? Please tell me i can fix it.

It's a hardware issue, not OS related. Contact HP tech support or a
competent local computer repair shop.

Try reseating the RAM. Also, try different (but compatible) RAM.

Re: Beep codes on boot up

I reseated the ram, and tried old ram that came with the machine. No progress.

Then can it, it's the motherboard. (it could be processor too, but
that involves spending money to find out). I have seen dead processors
on occasion.

To verify: remove/unplug *everything* except RAM and Video. If it
still beeps, it's toast.

Memory, motherboard, CPU, the point is it's in the hardware, not the OS, so
you should post to a hardware group.

You'd best make a backup of all critical files if you havent already got a
recent one.

If you go to http://www.bioscentral.com/ you will be able to see what 4
beeps indicates. That's what the beep codes are for - to identify which
hardware device is failing. Why guess?
