Re: Power failure - Update

Hi All,

I went to she my friend today and I started the PC today with the boot
floppy, result was it start and showed me the A:-prompt...
And due to lacking what to do next I tried to go to the C:\-drive and got a
message that it was an invalid drive.

So next step was trying to access the cmos/bios as described in below
message, with no results. No beep on holding the DEL or F2-key.

Therefore I inserted the CD-Rom given to us and started the PC, then
selected
the option "Recovery" and followed the process.
Result was after 45 minutes that we were able to start Windows again.

Next I entered the command CHKDSK /R, restarted the PC
and the checkdisk process started and completed after the expected 30-40
minutes.

And it seems we are back in the air, but I what I do not get is why I had to
run the "Recovery" option and not the "Restore" since the result seem to be
the same; all data and settings are gone.

I will to go back on Wednesday-evening to adjust her wallpaper, install
Windows Works, etc... and make things look the way she is used too...

It wasn't really my week this week and I had a few things on my mind, which
made me not ask all kind of questions, I should have, I guess...
like if I would use "recovery" mode if I would loose data or not...

Anyways, we seem to be up in the air again, so *THANK* you all for your help
and advice!

Ellen

I'm glad you are back running again. Take this time now to set up a regular
backup of important data so when problems arise again, you'll not loose
anything. Data loss is an issue of when not if. If you need info on how to
do this just search the posts in this newsgroup. It's covered frequently,
and ask questions if you have them.

Re: Power failure - Update

Hi Rock,

thanks for the advice re. backups, I told her this in the past and I told
her again yesterday.
I also told her I will come over and do it for her, since otherwise we end
up with the same result and I have a feeling it will happen again.

However this does not answer my main question:
why I had to run the "Recovery" option and not the "Restore" since the
result seem to be the same; all data and settings are gone.

Thanks,
Ellen
