Two app. versions in one program ?

After an application upgrade I notice that when a file of appropriate type
is right clicked, the 'Open With' list includes both the new and the old
versions of the app. If the new version icon is clicked the new version
opens, and if the old version icon is clicked the old version opens. Each
version is fully functional and 'About' confirms different version numbers.

Now it must be that path to the old version can be accessed from the old
icon and that version is in there somewhere, but it's not shown in the
Control Panel / Add Remove programs list. Only the new version is shown.
Similarly using Explorer in Program Files no trace of the older version can
be found. I cannot find the old icon anywhere else except 'Open With'.

How can this be ?

There is only one entry in Program Files -the new version.
Could it be that the new version contains both the old and new version
components, the main part of the app. being common, with just a few dll's
specific to each version activated by the appropriate icon link ?
