| C: Drive too full? Hi, I am using Windows XP Pro. My hard drive is small, 34.9 GB. Currently 19.6 GB (or 56%) is free. At approximately what percent of used space will the computer start suffereing degradation of performance? Thank you. |

Performance problems are usually due to resource hungry applications that you have running, not how much "stuff" you have on the drive. Use CCleaner to cleanup temp files, browser history, etc. then defrag your drive to help performance. I start thinking about a larger drive when it reaches 25% free space. |

As mentioned, when there is little free space left... then defrag won't have room to work...and at that time your performance will suffer. What you can do for now to gain some free space on your drive: If the machine is a desktop and you do not use hibernation you can turn that off Also...you can reduce the size of System Restore from it's default of 12% down to maybe 3% or so. Just leave enough there for six (or eight) restore points |
