Does an XP repair just override the files or add new ones?

When you do an XP repair such as for a new motherboard, does the repair add
more files or overright the old ones? Will it clog up my hard drive with
^&^&) files?

A repair install overwrites the old files, but it won't work unless the
Service Pack level of the disk is the same as that on the hard drive. It
won't "clog up" your hard drive with extra files.
