You should make note that the newsgroup in question is NOT on this
server. Also, not all news servers carry it at this time.

That's because MS now prefer we all use Answers instead of NG's. So
maybe we must move to
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...egory/windows7 to
ask for W7 help.

I have to say there does seem to be a large number of Microsoft support
engineers posting there - so a benefit to counteract the downside of a web
forum?

No WE don't have to do anything. Some people prefer newsgroups to
forums. Simple as that.

Not that I have seen so far. But I can see it would make more sense to
spread that around so people will avoid the newsgroups and go to the MS
forums. It will make it easier to explain why this server will
eventually be shut down as well.

The main disadvantage of web based forums, is the contents can be
thrown away on a whim. And then the contents so carefully prepared
by the participants are lost - and potentially have to be written
up and posted again elsewhere.

It happened to the Matrox forums, it happened to the original Asus
forums, it happened to Viaarena. It has also happened in more minor
ways to other forums, where a new version of web site software meant
that the old posts could not be carried forward.

Any time a web forum has a "no robots" exclusion, the site doesn't get
backed up on web.archive.org, so may not be available there either.

That makes web forums, a total waste of time.

Says the fact MS isn't putting Win7 forums and you make comments of "oh,
its probably full of trolls too." Might as well just add "but the new
answers forum isn't full of trolls!".

Everything is point to the discontinuing of this news server, not the
continuation.
