| blue screen of death! I have a laptop- Dell inspiron e1505 for about 3 years with minor problems. Always did my updates as i thought fit. Recently the fatal blue screen of death popped up saying, STOP: c000021a {fatal system error} The Windows Logon system process terminated unexpectedly with a status o f 0xc0000006 (0x00000000 0x00000000) The system has been shut down. I haven't noticed how important my imformation on my laptop was till i had no access to it. Is there a way to fix it? If not is there a way to retrieve my important files from the hard drive? Am desperatly in need of help with this or i might need a phsycatrist. please help... thanx---David A. |

| Re: blue screen of death! Obviously the system is unusable. The part of the startup process that controls login failed to load or aborted. You might try a Safe Mode boot using the option "Last Known Working Configuration". This loads XP based on it's last good boot cycle. To do this press F8 at 1/2 sec intervals after you cold start the PC. A Safe mode menu will appear and you'll need to use up/dn keys to highlight the option above and Press Enter to boot. The data can likely be accessed with either a Linux Boot disk or an imaging program such as Acronis True Image. The key thing to keep in mind is proceed slowly. At this point both the data and OS are likely fixable. However if you take random actions you decrease the chances of recovery. If you have a locally owned/small computer shop you may want to have them take a look at the PC. Sometimes money is less expensive than time & effort on your part. If this fails too then you could remove the hard disk of your laptop and install it in an external USB case which you can then connect to some other WinXP PC to save your data. Note also that there are two groups of people: Those who do not back up their important files regularly and those who do. Over time all members of the first group migrate to the second group. The transition can be very painful. I hope that yours is bearable. Perhaps you will check out the cost of a 2.5" hard disk that you could use as a permanent backup medium, using the USB case I mentioned before. |

Am desperatly in need of help Do not attempt to repair the old C: or boot from it until you have rescued your essential data. This is most easily done by adding your drive to another PC that boots from its own drive (without the risk of writing anything to your drive.) Then make a copy or clone of your drive, or at least those folders that hold valuable data. If you have any difficulties, repair the copy/clone and do not tinker with the original. -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

Check out the following KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669 Boot your laptop with a Knoppix boot disk and copy your data to a USB external hard drive before doing anything. |

| Re: blue screen of death! This occurs when Windows switches into kernel mode and a user-mode subsystem, such as Winlogon or the Client Server Runtime Subsystem (CSRSS), is compromised. Security can no longer be guaranteed. Because Win XP can’t run without Winlogon or CSRSS, this is one of the few situations where the failure of a user-mode service can cause the system to stop responding. This Stop message also can occur as a result of malware infestation or when the computer is restarted after a system administrator has modified permissions so that the SYSTEM account no longer has adequate permissions to access system files and folders http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316503&sd=RMVP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318666&sd=RMVP -- Peter Please Reply to Newsgroup for the benefit of others Requests for assistance by email can not and will not be acknowledged.
