could not start the event log service on local computer Hello, Running Windows XP Ent. SP3. The Event log service is automatic, but will not start. When I try to start it, I get "Could not start the event log service on local computer Error 126: the specified module could not be found" When I open up event viewer and try, for example, to open up the System log, I get: Unable to complete operation on "system" the interface is unknown I tried to reinstall SP3, and it still is not working. Any suggestions please????? Thanks Gene

| RE: could not start the event log service on local computer UPDATED: BTW, I deleted all the C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\*.Evt files and rebooted. Still having the same issue. Happens with app log, system log, security log, etc. Same errors. Thanks Gene "Gene" wrote: > Hello, > > Running Windows XP Ent. SP3. The Event log service is automatic, but will > not start. | Re: could not start the event log service on local computer Try "Method 2" here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279754 Or try SFC /SCANNOW: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html John Gene wrote: > Hello, > > Running Windows XP Ent. | Re: could not start the event log service on local computer I agonized over the same problem for several days but found the solution. My Avast AV had quarantined the file "eventlog.dll" after detecting a nasty there. There should be two copies, one in sys32 and one in sys32\dllcache. If one is missing copy and paste from the other. If both are missing try to get them from either your installation disk or one of the many download sites. After these files are in place start services.msc, click on event log and click start. Also be sure it is set to automatic so it always fires up when you reboot. Your logs should now display unless some other bug has occured. BTW, task scheduler is dependent on the logging service to function as well. Killed two birds with one stone. Good luck! |

Re: could not start the event log service on local computer A big thanks to lllinton. Had the same problem today and fixed it thanks to you in 2 mins. However, my AVG didn't grab hold of it? So i don't know where it went. Once again thanks.

Re: could not start the event log service on local computer Another big thanks to lllinton! I had a nasty rogue anti-spyware program called "Antivirus System Pro" on my PC. Even though I thought I had enough software to block a unauthorized install, it got through anyway. What a piece of work to remove! I used a couple of programs to clean my PC but afterward when I tried to fire up Diskeeper I couldn't because my event log service wouldn't run. It probably got removed when I cleaned my PC. I tried a couple of things before finding your fix & like mainframe said, it was fixed in 2 minutes! :) I usually don't join sites like this. I just lurk but your help made my day. I was actually thinking of a re-install & you saved me a lot of time. Thanks again! If I ever find any of these coders/companies writing these spyware/malware/virus programs they better hope that God will save them from me! A number of my family & friends are getting this crap on their PCs too. This isn't funny anymore...

Re: could not start the event log service on local computer Another big thanks to lllinton. Had the same problem today and quickly fixed it thanks to you. My Avast quarantined a virus and it turned out that my eventlog.dll got taken out also. I spend several hours scanning the net for an answer as to why my eventlog wouldn't start. Thank you soooooo much for posting. Now I can go back to resolving my first problem. Thanks again!!!
