StartUp Selection??

WinXPproSP2 on start up; a black screen comes up with:

"Please Select the Operating System to Start"
1. Microsoft Windows XP professional
2. Microsoft Windows XP professional Setup

If 1. is selected PC starts o.k.
If 2. is selected PC hangs reporting corrupt hal.dll

Why the black screen selection on StartUp???

How can this be fixed for a normal startup???

Re: StartUp Selection??

not sure what you mean by blank screen.

--------------

you can remove the second line from the
boot menu by editing the boot.ini file.

I thought I typed "black" screen, which never before appeared with a
selection to startup..

Re: StartUp Selection??

yeah you did. sorry.

it might be due to an incomplete
setup,

perhaps, the black screen is
awaiting for an input to boot
with the cd.

hence the line number two in
the boot menu.

try booting with the cd,
select repair from the first
screen.

then when you are logged into
the disk system type the following
commands at the prompt>:

chkdsk /r
fixboot
bootconfig /rebuild

then exit, remove cd and
try to boot normally again.

------------

the bootcfg can be tricky to input
the required data.

but enter what you can then you
can modify the entry by editing
the boot ini.

Re: StartUp Selection??

actually bootconfig is incorrect

the correct command is

bootcfg /rebuild

or if you want

bootcfg /?

Yes, this just suddenly appeared on a recent startup.

Let's take a look at the contents of your boot.ini file with notepad
and then fix it.

Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Startup and Recovery -
Settings, Edit (opens boot.ini with Notepad)

Edit, Select All, Edit, Copy, File, Exit. Cancel your way out making
no changes to anything.

We can adjust it later.

Then come back here and paste (Ctrl V) the contents.

Here is an example of a simple boot.ini so you know what yours might
look like.

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Professional" /
fastdetect
