I have a windows XP MCE. I have been thinking about taking the deal MS
is offering about getting an upgrade to vista and windows 7. Meaning that
vista and 7 ship together. Does anyone know how long that deal is going to
last?

Microsoft is offering no such deal, to my knowledge. Some computer
manufacturers are currently offering systems with Vista pre-installed,
along with a voucher for a free Upgrade to Win7. How long such offers
will continue is up to the individual computer manufacturers.

I should point out, however, that a system that sold with WinXP MCE may
not necessarily be a good candidate for upgrading to either Vista or
Win7, due to hardware requirements and compatibility issues. Both
Vista and WEin7 have much more stringent minimum hardware requirements
than did WinXP. Mind you, I'm not saying it can't be done, but you'll
want to compare your system's hardware specifications with Vista's and
Win7's minimum and recommended requirements before making the leap.

It depends on who you buy from. DELL (EUROPE) have stopped supplying
VISTA; You only get Windows 7 considering that it is officially released
on 22/10/2009. By the time Dell have built your system, Windows 7 will
be out so they only supply Windows 7.

Dab's offer expires on 31/01/2010 or until their current stock is sold
depending on whichever is sooner for obvious reasons; they only supply
pre-built systems made by HP and others so they need to keep their offer
open.

Yeah that's the thing. But my MCE is a 32 bit OS and I'm running an AMD
64. And I only have a solaris unix that is 64 bit.

This is what I've heard. You can get an upgrade disc for vista from XP
but you can't get an upgrade from XP to windows 7. Does anyone know if
that's true.

it only does a clean install. this means that although you are doing an
upgrade, the installation of Windows 7 will wipe the entire disk clean
and start all over again. You will lose all your personal data if you
don't make a backup on an external storage like CD/DVD or flash drive.

You only pay for the upgrade. The only disadvantage I can see of an
upgrade CD is that you will need to keep the CD for XP (even for Vista)
if in the future you need to reinstall Win7. I keep all my previous
versions (in duplicates) so I am not worried about this.

Do you want to upgrade your current PC to Vista and then upgrade it to
Windows 7?

I think the only way you can do that is to purchase the Full version
(not the Upgrade version) of Vista and taking advantage of the offer to
upgrade Vista to Windows 7 from this page:

If I were you, and if your PC's specs are robust enough to handle
Windows 7, I would simply purchase the Upgrade version of Windows 7. I
doubt you would ever want to put Vista on your PC! :-)

"Kinda sorta." While WinXP is a *qualifying* product for the Win7
Upgrade license, it's not technically possible to perform an in-place
upgrade from WinXP to Win7; a clean installation of Win7 would be required.
