| Event Viewer Error After 4+ years of superior performance, my Toshiba A75 laptop has problems. About a month ago, the laptop began to display STOP messages that said to disable the anti-virus software and run CHKDSK. On a number of occassions, the screen failed to work and/or the computer simply shut down. On other occassion, the screen would display an image or a partial image with verticle lines running throughout the picture. Over the last month, I have tried to run CHKDSK many times. It has frozen at many different intervals in the CHKDSK process. Recently, I read about the event viewer which I checked and found that my computer recorded two messagese after each time that I had a problem. The first message reads: "Windows cannot query DllName registry entry for (CF7639F3-ABA2-41DB-97F2-81E2C5DBFC5D). This is mostly likely caused by a faulty registration." The second message reads exactly the same except for the numberical quotation is different. It reads (7B849a69-220F-451E-B3FE-2CB811AF94AE). I don't know much about the life of a laptop. But the cost of diagnosing this problem, at least according to local technicians, is at a point where purchasing a new laptop probably makes sense. I would like to know (1) what is causing this problem with my laptop and (2) are the technicians' correct? Thanks in advance. Al Charbonneau |

The event log errors are not hard to understand but fixing them will probably not not help you with chkdsk not running, STOP defective display, etc. Those should be addresses individually but let's see what we have right now. These look like they have something to do with IE8... so run some reputable malware scans, provide your system information, what version of IE you are running and have you now or ever installed/uninstalled any beta versions of IE8, what is your IE version now and read/do how to copy Event Log information: Reduce the chances of malicious software by running some scans. Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs: Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/ SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/ These can be uninstalled later if desired. Click Start, Run and in the box enter: msinfo32 Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork and assumptions. Here is some help in a method to post items from the Event Viewer: Here is a method to post the specific information about individual events. To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box enter: %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s Click OK to launch the Event Viewer. The most interesting logs are usually the Application and System. Some logs may be almost or completely empty. Not every event it a problem, some are informational messages that things are working okay. Each event is sorted by Date and Time. Errors will have red Xs, Warnings will have yellow !s. Information messages have white is. Not every Error or Warning event means there is a serious issue. Some are excusable at startup time when Windows is booting. If you double click an event, it will open a Properties windows with more information. On the right are black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to your Windows clipboard. When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of your issue, click the third button under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, Paste or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis. To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear the log (backing up the log is offered), then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the time of your issue. |

| RE: Event Viewer Error Hi Thanks for responding. I got as far as Winlogon but could not find \GPExtensions= nor the items in the right pane/window that you mentioned. Any thoughts? | RE: Event Viewer Error Try to search your Registry for this CLSID: Right click on any Hive and select Find then copy and paste the CLSID in the search box to find it and delete it. {CF7639F3-ABA2-41DB-97F2-81E2C5DBFC5D} {7B849a69-220F-451E-B3FE-2CB811AF94AE} What did you find in the Registry? [-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon I think you used the Registry Key for HKEY_CURRENT_USER, try the next one and click on the Plus [+] to expand to [-] and look for the entry and delete it. | RE: Event Viewer Error Hi You were correct! I was looking in the wrong area. So far, so good. My computer is running much better with non of the video and/or unable to start symptoms mentioned previously. I still can't run CHKDSK - it gets only so far and then it hangs. Can you advise me on how to fix the CHKDSK problem? As you may recall, it was the first step recommended by Windows and, frankly, I don't know if I have a problem with my hard drive. Thanks again - you have been very helpful. | RE: Event Viewer Error Hi Al, Glad there is some progress here on your issue! How much disk space you got on this machine? how much RAM? It seems the chkdsk may be one of its file damaged or corrupt ( it is a mere guess). Try to run disk clean up and defrag in safe mode then try this: Double click My Computer >> C: (right-click) >> properties >> tools (tab) >> "Check Now" and enable both fix and recover options check boxes and reboot your machine. Are you able to run chkdsk? What error you get when you try? Or try this command ( you will need XP installation media CD) sfc /scannow Did you scan for malware and viruses? Please backup your data, your Hard drive my be going bad. Regards nass --- http://www.nasstec.co.uk "Al Charbonneau" wrote: > Hi > > You were correct! I was looking in the wrong area.
