| Limited account question hi. i am having problems in a limited account playing a game in xp home edition. the account has been set for a child to prevent changes to os. however, there is one game that does not work in limited account, but works fine in admin account. The game requires the cd during use. i have changed the account to admin, tried installing the game and changing back to limited without success. I have looked at an ms article that warns that some programmes won't work and advise to temporarily or permanently change to admin but this is not really an option. is there a way round this? TIA |

What happens? Normally the problem involves permissions. If the game is old and is trying to write to an area of the hard drive forbidden to a Limited account, you can get around this by determining exactly where this is. The free Sysinternals utilities filemon and regmon can help. Run the game and the utilities in an administrative account and make a note of the locations. Then change the permissions to Everyone Full on just those specific locations. Since you have XP Home, you'll need to go into Safe Mode to see the security tab. How Do I Get the Security tab in Folder Properties? - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_security_tab.htm http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...s/default.mspx An alternative (if the game is a current version) is to contact the game mftr.'s tech support for workarounds, patches, and/or the information about where the game is trying to write. | Re: Limited account question hi malke, i failed to mention that the machine is not mine and am looking for instructions to pass on to the owners. i doubt if they will be able or willing to try your first suggestion. it looks like i'll have to take the advice of your latter suggestion and see where that leads. but thanks for your prompt reply.
