USB port not activated after reboot Windows XP

I updated my computer with all the lates Windows updates hoping to solve the problem just in case you are wondering if I did...

However (even before I did the updates) each time I reboot my computer, the USB port is not activated which means I have to unplug my WLAN dongle and plug it in again just so it's recognized. After this it works fine untill the next reboot.

Can anyone tell me how to solve this annoying problem? Thanks!

Is the problem restricted to your WLAN dongle or does it apply to other USB
devices too? If it only affects the WLAN dongle then the dongle software is
most likely at fault. If so then you should check the manufacturer's FAQs
and/or send a note to his help desk. What is the exact brand and model of
the dongle?

Thanks for you quick reply! No, not just the dongle, the entire port seems to be de-activated. According to the company where I bought it, it's an XP issue... Hope you can help!

Did you try some other USB device? If so, what type of device?

Does the motherboard have jumpers to select USB powering via
+5V versus +5VSB ? Perhaps you can try changing that jumper.

You can see power option jumpers in this picture. The two little
yellow things. The jumper plug either goes to pins 1-2 or to
pins 2-3.

Changing the power to +5V, may result in the USB peripheral getting
reset when you start the computer. (Even though USB bus resets
are happening all the time, when the USB bus is started.) Sometimes
that is enough to change the behavior.

Not all motherboards have options like that. If yours doesn't have
options like that, about the only other thing you can try, is plugging
your USB peripheral into a separate USB2 hub.

Hi Paul, thanks!

However, the link with the jpg doesn't work...
As for the motherboard, I will have to open the pc up and check it out.

Why do you think a USBhub2 would do the trick? Isn't that a pheripheral too? I'll go get one and test it as you say, hopefully that will solve the problem.

Cheers!

USB is voodoo, and if you already own a USB2 hub, then it is worth
testing to see if it makes a difference.

In theory, it should not matter. Each bus segment should involve a bus reset,
and it shouldn't matter whether a peripheral is connected directly to the PC,
or is connected via a hub. But the behavior might change, you never know.

And if you fail to make any progress, and still have to plug and unplug
the device, there are USB switch products for sale. They may help prevent
you from wearing out the connector. These devices come in various configurations,
and allow moving peripherals between computers. If used with one computer, you
should be able to fake a plug-unplug operation.

This one handles two peripherals and two computers.

This one handles one peripheral shared with four computers.

I have often wondered why inserting certain USB hubs helped with this
detection and other hubs did not. Now I'm thinking that the brain chip in
the hub is the determining factor. Is there a way to query the hubs to
identify these more versatile hubs and avoid buying the less versatile hubs
in the future?

Problem might not be with the USB port itself. I have seen wifi
dongles "flake" out and not work correctly. Problem was with the
dongle's drivers and a revised driver downloaded from the
manufacturer's web site, tend to fix this.
