Keep losing virtually all my memory

I have plenty of memory installed on my computer but without opening any
programs this disappears over the course of a day. For about 12 hours
everything is fine then over the next 3 or 4 hours my memory disappears to
virtually next to nothing, meaning I have to reboot. Everything then is fine.
Any ideas? Many thanks.

How do you know that memory is disappearing? Exactly what are you
seeing?

Re: Keep losing virtually all my memory

I'm looking in Task Manager and physical memory. My total memory is reading
982512 (K). The PF usage goes up and up then eventually my available physical
memory goes right down so then I have no memory to open any programs.

That is how Windows is designed to work. Unused memory should perhaps
be described as "useless memory" because that is what it actually is -
memory for which Windows has so far been totally unable to find any
beneficial use for.

Are you having performance issues? That would be a different
situation, but just the cosmetics of "available memory" is not an
issue.

Good luck

Re: Keep losing virtually all my memory

Thank you for the reply. The problem is my memory gets so low that programs
like AVG start to close and I have no memory to open anything up. I think my
virtual memory usage is way too high as the 'page file usage history' is at
the top of the graph.

Are you running just AVG antivirus, or do you have their antispyware
installed as well?

When your computer starts to exhibit these problems, bring up Windows
Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and go to the Processes tab. Click
twice on the Mem Usage column header (Use View - Select Columns to add
it if it is not currently included) to sort the list into descending
order based on memory usage. Make a list of the top 5 or 6 processes
and their memory usage figures and post that information back here.

Good luck

Re: Keep losing virtually all my memory

I am just using AVG antivirus. When I get the problems I dont notice anything
unusual in processes in Task manager.

If you are getting memory related warnings then something has to be
using that memory, and the memory usage column in Task Manager should
show you which processes are using large amounts of memory.

Re: Keep losing virtually all my memory

But nothing is showing to be using much memory at all. My Page File usage
history is at the top so i seem to be using alot of virtual memory.

Re: Keep losing virtually all my memory

Thank you Ron for your answers. When I have the problems the PF usage
indicator is right at the top. I've read that it should be below half way.

What is the numeric value shown at the bottom of the PF Usage graph?
