lulabob:
Because a SATA HDD has the potential quality of being "hot-pluggable" (some
call it "hot-swappable"), the system will sometimes treat it as a removable
drive in terms of reflecting the Safely Remove Icon in the Notification area
(Systray) similar, for example, to a USB external HDD. I'm not aware of any
practical way to disable that icon. (I have heard there are third-party
programs that presumably have that capability but I've no experience with
them). There is, however, in XP a "Hide inactive icons" feature that you may
be interested in - see
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;279771

The (practical) bottom-line in all this is that you can just ignore the SRI;
you need not access it in any way with respect to your SATA HDD(s).

RE: safely remove hardware

It sounds to me like you have a card reader or some other usb storage device
in the computer. Have you tried opening your C: drive in my computer? Odd's
are that it is not your system drive and it is a card reader or a usb storage
drive. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by leaving the card
reader or usb storage device connected while formatting and reinstalling
windows. If, indeed this is what has happened to you and your system drive
is actually another drive letter say D: through Z: then you will either have
to live with it or you will have to reformat your computer and reinstall
windows again with the card reader or any other usb storage unplugged during
the process. The Drive letter for the system partition can not be changed
without major issues. Hope this helps. Good Luck,

Joe

Don't really know why it should show up at this time. It's the motherboard
that controls that situation. You mentioned reinstalling the chipset
drivers. Possible that these were updated or different drivers than
originally installed on your system? That might account for it (as well as
any BIOS upgrade or different SATA controller drivers that might have been
subsequently installed).

In Device Manager, Disk drives, C: drive Properties, the Policies tab
might have the answer. At least, it mentions the "Safe to Remove" icon.
Maybe a change in settings there.

haven't gotten around to installing yet this time. you're a genius. tell your
boss i said to give you a raise.
