| Disk Cleanup causes buffer overrun Help. I'm unable to run the Disk Cleanup utility. I get the following error: ----- Buffer overrun detected! Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\cleanmgr.exe A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated. ----- My System Restore has also been disabled. It says that I need to run the Disk Cleanup -- but I can't . What's wrong and what do I need to do? Tx |

What says you "need to run the Disk Cleanup"? We don't really have enough information about your machine. Googling for "Disk Cleanup buffer overrun" brings me quite a few links about malware removal which may or may not be relevant. So to start off, answer these two questions: The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure the computer is clean: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware Then post back and tell us the answers and include a bit more information about your computer such as its approximate age, the size of the hard drive, how much free space is left on the drive, that sort of thing. The reason for asking for this information is so we can narrow down the troubleshooting for you. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" The __real__ issue is that my System Restore is off and I can't seem to get it back on. On my System Restore tab: 1. Turn off System Restore is __not selected__ 2. In Status, it says: System Restore is suspended because there is not ecough disk space available. To restart System Restore, click Disk Cleanup and ensure at least %dMB of free disk space is available. I click Disk Cleanup and got the Buffer Overrun error. I did some Googling and manually deleted the items in the the %TEMP% folder. I have now been able to run Disk Cleanup successfully, but the System Restore tab still says that it is suspended. More info: I am running WixXP Professional. Windows reports that my C Drive is 149GB, with 114GB free. I have tried to manually start the System Restore Service (it is marked as Startup = Automatic) and received this error: Could not start the System Restore Service service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified. Thanks for the help. |

It certainly seems like you should have enough space. Here are MVP Bert Kinney's System Restore troubleshooting pages. I'd go through whatever he suggests since he's our resident System Restore expert. http://bertk.mvps.org Post back after you've been through Bert's suggestions and let me know what happened. And just for thoroughness, is the computer virus/malware-free? Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |
