iTunes registry settings on XP prevent burning CDs

Running iTunes 8.2.1.6 on XP, I used to be able to burn CDs from iTunes.
However, somehow I lost access to my CDROM after updating the BIOS on my
Dell computer, so installed KB314060 and can now see my CDROM drive again.
Now everytime I start up iTunes it presents me with "ITunes setup assistant
Warning! : The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing
and burning CDs are missing. ... Reinstall iTunes".
I can import CDs into iTunes, but cannot burn them.
Running the iTunes Diagnostics for CDROM drive shows:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Dell Inc. Dimension 5100
iTunes 8.2.1.6
QuickTime 7.6.2
FairPlay 1.4.10
iPod Updater Library 8.1d19
CD Driver 2.1.0.1
CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1
Apple Mobile Device 2.5.2.2
Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.
Bonjour 1.0.6.2 (118.5)

iTunes Serial Number 9CE959xxxxxxxxxx (I've blanked this bit out)

Current user is an administrator.
The current local date and time is 2009-08-16 23:14:05.
iTunes is not running in safe mode.

Video Display Information

RADEON X300 SE 128MB HyperMemory
RADEON X300 SE 128MB HyperMemory Secondary

**** External Plug-ins Information ****

No external plug-ins installed.

**** CD/DVD Drive Tests ****

No drivers in LowerFilters.
No drivers in UpperFilters.
Failed loading CD / DVD drives, error -43. Try doing a repair install on
iTunes from the "Add or Remove Programs" control panel.

Writing CD text is turned on in the preferences. If you're having problems
burning CDs, try turning this preference off.
Force Optical Power Calibration before burn is turned on in the preferences.
The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4251(0x0000109b). It happened
on drive D: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109 on CDR media at speed 4X.
--------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see I don't have any upper or lower filters, so whereas other
people have fixed their problem by going into regedit and removing these, I
can't do this as I don't have any to remove.
Things I've tried to fix this problem include:
- repairing iTunes (via Contol Panel)
- completely uninstalling and re-installing iTunes
- removing the CDROM driver and re-installing it
- updating the firmware for the CDROM (but I was at the latest level anyway)
- searched the Apple iTunes forums.

Please can anyone help??
Thanks, Al.

RE: iTunes registry settings on XP prevent burning CDs

I am having the same problem but I did not update my BIOS and my iTunes
version is the most current (version 9). I uninstalled, rebooted,
reinstalled and even tried the repair from the Control Panel, to no avail. I
had also removed the lower and upper Filters previously. Here is my iTunes
Diagnostics for the CD/DVD drives:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
System Manufacturer System Name
iTunes 9.0.2.25
QuickTime 7.6.4
FairPlay 1.5.23
Apple Application Support 1.0.1
iPod Updater Library 9.0d11
CD Driver 2.2.0.1
CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1
Apple Mobile Device 2.6.0.32
Apple Mobile Device Driver 1.45.0.0
Bonjour 1.0.6.2 (118.5)

iTunes Serial Number 12xxxxxxxxxxxxxx <-xed-out

Current user is an administrator.
The current local date and time is 2009-11-05 17:36:13.
iTunes is not running in safe mode.

Video Display Information

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200

**** External Plug-ins Information ****

No external plug-ins installed.

iPodService 9.0.2.25 is currently running.
iTunesHelper 9.0.2.25 is currently running.
Apple Mobile Device service 2.50.39.0 is currently running.

**** CD/DVD Drive Tests ****

No drivers in LowerFilters.
No drivers in UpperFilters.
Failed loading CD / DVD drives, error -43. Try doing a repair install on
iTunes from the “Add or Remove Programs” control panel.
----------------------------------------------------
I have had this problem a while now but started investigating it a couple of
days ago only.

For all Apple's "ease of use", their web page is not very helpful.
Microsoft seems to be more prepared to help us out. Please help us here!
