Have you downloaded a third party Copy utility?

Clipboard is provided with Windows XP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipboard_(software)

DEP =Data Execution Prevention
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_Execution_Prevention

Whatever your windows copy utility is not acceptable to DEP!

Great - thanks for the tip. Now what's this Vista question doing in a
newsgroup that is clearly marked "Windows XP"? (This, of course, is a
question for the OP, not for you).

utility. this problem has just started happening. could it be a virus or
something? i have done a full scan using McAfee. i have windows defender
installed, and i have taken all the protection i can. it shows in the DEP
allert that windows copy utility is a window program

What makes you think that MVPs know everything about Windows? They don't.
You may know a few things about Windows that I don't and I probably know a
thing or two that you don't.

Re: windows copy utility

jj

I do not know much about DEP. My current system has the default Opt In
setting.

A detailed description of the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature in
Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and
Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352#5

The question you have to establish is why is it intervening? Are you
running any older software from a previous computer?

How and what are you copying? Please describe in detail? Does it
involve external media e.g. CD / DVD and software like Roxio and the
like?

Not only that, but if he had called it "DEP" instead of "The DEP," you
would probably have known what he meant.

When I saw his original message, with the word "The" before "DEP," I
also thought he was talking about something other than "Data Execution
Prevention."

When you wrote "how does a MVP not know about DEP (data execution
pervention) in Windows XP?" you probably meant to say "how does a MVP not
know that DEP (data execution pervention) is a Windows XP / Vista feature?"
This would have been a good point, revealing that I failed to do sufficient
homework after reading John Inzer's reply and that my point about your
incorrect posting was misplaced. Your question was appropriate all along and
you posted it in the correct newsgroup.

About the problem itself: Gery's question is highly relevant. Since DEP
kicks in when Windows attempts to execute code that resides in an area
reserved for data, the question is: What "copy utility" do you use? Windows
Explorer? Some console command such as "copy" or "robocopy"? Some
third-party tool? What did you install or change recently? Have you
considered using System Restore to reset your system to a date prior to
observing the problem? Do you have good and updated virus scanner?
