| Missing/Corrupt /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM problem! I have a computer running on Windows XP and I required a virus that kept taking me to a blue screen telling me to delete whatever i recently downloaded. I did this and it took me to a black screen reading...Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\ and it tells me to insert Repair CD-Rom and press 'r'. THere is one probem...i do not have a Windows XP disk only a Windows Vista SP1 disk from my other computer. I need this computer up and running and do not really care about the files only having it running again. I have read many other threads that spoke about having a Windows XP disk(Which I do not have) or recoverying the files to a flash drive so i have the files. I dont care so much for these files but for the computer. PLEASE HELP ME. P.S-I do not intend on spending lots of cash on a new disk or taking the computer to the shop! You can e-mail me on hotmail(zmoney444). P.S- I dont want to spend money on a Windows disk or taking the computer to a shop. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! Last edited by zmoney444; 07-06-2009 at 10:07 PM.. |

The manual that came with your PC tells you which one it is. Have a look at it, then select the method that is appropriate for your PC. |

| Re: Missing/Corrupt /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM problem! If the computer doesn't have a hidden Recovery partition, you're SOL. PS: A Repair Install will NOT fix this! zmoney444 wrote: > I have a computer running on Windows XP and I required a virus that kept > taking me to a blue screen telling me to delete whatever i recently > downloaded. You can get your stuff off if you have access to another computer (with a CD burner) and someone's Windows XP CD. You can use those to create a Windows Ultimate Boot CD - boot your computer and get whatever you want off it and onto external media (CD/DVD/USB drive/Network Share/etc.) http://www.ubcd4win.com/ As far as fixing it - if it is a hardware issue (hard disk drive crash) and all it had was a recovery partition to restore it back to it's "as purchased" state - you are likely out of luck. If you don't have a spare hard disk drive (good one) and the proper type/flavor of Windows installation media sitting around - you will be spending money on one or both. As far as fixing it - if it is strictly a software issue - you might get away with a borrowed CD of the same flavor (Windows XP Home, Professional, Media Center, etc) and then changing the key back to your own if necessary. You might not even have to worry about the key if the *fix* is successful without a lot of other muss/fuss: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545 Use the "Manual steps to recover a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting". I have only seen those work twice out of the six times I had to try and fix this issue. In the other four times - it was a bad hard disk drive. Once the drive is dead - you need to replace the hard disk drive or you will get pretty much no-where. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

Here are two points to consider: - After formatting drive C: and re-installing Windows, your chances of recovering your data files are small to nil. - This "wonderful" product costs $99.00. Not exactly cheap. |

PLEASE HELP > ME!!!!! > > -- > zmoney444 Did you encounter a power interruption lately or some abnormal XP shutdown? The KB article is a good idea, but starts with: 1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk UBCD4WIN is also great and everyone should have one, but it also requires you to have an XP installation CD. Why don't you just create a bootable CD that has only the Windows Recovery Console on it? The cost is quite reasonable at $zero. One requirement is that you have a working machine with hardware capable of burning a CD. That will give you the same commands as if you booted RC from a "real" XP installation CD or were clever enough to install RC on your HDD (hindsight!). You may be able to get away with just booting on that CD and run chkdsk /r on your HDD. Maybe... It is certainly easier than some of the alternatives and does not require an XP installation CD. |

Great if you have never made a bootable CD before: http://www.imgburn.com/ I read that the Vista bootable CD (if you have one), has an enhanced chkdsk that will work with XP, but I have no way to try that. |

| Re: Missing/Corrupt /WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM problem! The problem with missing or corrupted files (in system32\config folder) can be solved two ways. In both cases you need a bootable CD (XP installation CD is good for the purpose) or another PC to which you can mount your HDD. 1) Scan your HDD for errors. The simple tool is windows's 'chkdsk' with parametrs /f /r. This may take time but at least you'd be sure HDD errors would be fixed. 2) After (or without) scanning, try to restore to previous state of the system. If your system restore function disabled skip this part and go to the step 3. 3) As a good advice restore your system with restore option that can be run from windows XP installation CD. As for using another PC... well, mount your HDD, get an access to 'System Volume Information' folder by giving rights to Aministrators group. There you can find folders named '_restore{547...ets .In it you'll find several folders named 'RP010' or smth like that. You need to open snapshot folder and rename files _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE & _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM into 'software' & 'system'. Then copy those files into c:\windows\system32\config replacing files there. In some cases you may need to restore _REGISTRY_USER_NTUSER_S-...etc This file rename into NTUSER.DAT & copy into your user's profile folder (For example c:\documents and settings\administrator) The bigger the size of the file in a row of files named _REGISTRY_USER_NTUSER that means the file is yours. (Other files are for other profiles). |
