Drivers for Dell Precision 670

I don't get involved with setting up PCs very often so forgive me for what
will probably seem like a dumb question to those who do this all the time....

I need help finding the Ethernet Controller drivers for a Dell Precision 670.

I purchased the computer, used, from a friend. It came with the hard drives
erased and I have already installed Windows XP SP2 on it.

When I look in Device Manager, I see that I am missing drivers for the
Ethernet card, video controller, and multimedia controller. The one that
concerns me most is the Ethernet card: I am trying to get this PC online so
that I can get all the remaining drivers and then network it with others in
the house but, right now, there are no network drivers installed.

Using another computer that is already online, I've been to the Dell website
and searched for drivers and limited it to XP. I downloaded what seemed to be
the appropriate files (R138111.exe and also R138112.exe) and burned them on
to a CD but when I try to install them on the Dell, it doesn't find the
drivers it wants.

I've never set up a Dell before but I would like to think that there should
be a file somewhere that has all of the drivers that I'll need to set up a
Precision 670 or, failing that, the individual drivers I need will be
findable from the web page but, so far, I'm coming up empty.

Can someone who is familiar with Dells please help me figure this out??

Re: Drivers for Dell Precision 670

DC, try creating a folder and place the files you downloaded in it.
Name the folder ( any name ) and from Device Manager>select update or
install the driver>click on "Install from
a list of specific Location" >next check the Include this location in
the search and then Browse to the folder you placed the files in. See if it
installs from the folder.

Dell makes it exceedingly easy to find everything you need for any of
their specific products. Simply go to the following site and enter the
Service Tag (a.k.a. Serial Number). You'll learn everything you need to
know about that specific machine as it was when it left the factory, and
find all of the drivers necessary for it.

Assuming there's a hidden Recovery partition, format & do a clean install

Re: Drivers for Dell Precision 670

The Dell Download is based on the connected computer. If it is not another
Precision 670 what you found probably is not the correct driver. I can't
help much more than that because my computer is a Dell 4400 and if I go to
the download it would show files specific for this. You would have to find a
way of forcing it to the correct Precision 670.

Re: Drivers for Dell Precision 670

If you can't find the service tag# -- which would show up in system info if
you can do a restore from the hidden partition --
You can wend your way to any system in the download support section
(dell.com, at the bottom pick driver & d/ls under the support list) by
selecting "choose model" & so on. I got to the P-670 but didn't take it any
farther than that. (it also seemed to leave a cookie or something so the
next time I went to driver support it went back to the P-670 -- but it's
easy to choose another system... Such are the perils & adventures involved
in "I was just curious!")

Maybe what you want is on that list somewhere. Besides you might want to
check for any other updated drivers. You can also find manuals in there.
No guarantees it'll work, & I've never tried to d/l a driver for one
computer onto another for sneakering over. But anyways I hope that helps.

Did you actually run the two files (Rxxxxxx.exe)?
If not then Windows won't find the drivers as those files are a self
extracting archive which need to be expanded first.

Copy the two files to your hard drive somewhere and then run them - they
should extract their contents to a couple of folders at
C:\Dell\drivers\Rxxxxxx

You can then point the New Hardware wizard at that location to install
the drivers.

To get the correct drivers for your machine, as someone has already
suggested, put in the service tag on the Dell site.

The service tag will be on a label at the back, or on the bottom, of
your machine.
