| Reimage new HD Hi, I am going to have my hard drive replaced because of read/write errors in the MFT bitmap and because I can't run Chkdsk /F. I have Norton Ghost 10. and made an image of my configuration. After they put in the new HD in is it safe to re image it with my present configuration of Windows or do I have to start all over again? I have a big problem with the HP Recovery disks and (I think) they are nor being read correctly. Every time I used them there are always three or four thing wrong with the installation. Have a good day, RScotti remove "nospam" in order to email me. |

If I was in your position I would start over just to be sure all is well with your installation. Just my two bobs worth, others may differ rgds Roberto |

| Re: Reimage new HD Thanks, I really was hoping I could just do the image but I was afraid that some of the defects might still be present but not sure where it is in the MFT Bitmap.I don't know if this is the reason I can't run Chkdsk /F. Where I have a lot of problems with their Recovery Disks I will probably try that first. I can always reimage if I get a lot of problems. Try it to find out. Laying the image back down won't take long. If it works, ok, if not then do a clean install. You should still be able to restore the data files from the image. I don't think it will work but it's worth a shot. I would make sure I had redundancy in data backup. Copy essential files to CD and/or flash drive. -- Rock [MVP - User/Shell] |

If you clone garbage, garbage is what you'll get. If you're having problems with your present HDD "because of read/write errors in the MFT bitmap and because I can't run Chkdsk /F" thus indicating that the drive is obviously dysfunctional, it's hard to imagine that a disk clone of such will magically remedy those problems. Seems to me you have one of two options... 1. Correct the problem on your present HDD so that it is bootable and functions without any problems, or, 2. Do a fresh install of the XP OS on your new HDD. Anna |

| Re: Reimage new HD Hi Rock, I think it is worth a try. I do have an external HD so I have all my data plus the Norton Ghost image. I just think I can reimage it to my new HD and it shouldn't have the defects in it. I hope I am right? As I said the recovery disks seem to create a lot of things going wrong. I don't have on this install: 1- the remove hardware notice when you disconnect a external HD 2- I don't get that Winlogin in Event Viewer to see the log files 3- MS Recovery Console doesn't work. The Chkdsk /F problem I think is because of the MFT Bitmap errors. | Re: Reimage new HD Hi Anna, I have already done four clean installs. Part of my problem is the HP Recovery Disks. see my message to Rock. I was hoping that I could just re Image my new HD with my present configuration but now I am not sure if there will be any errors transmitted.I don't think there will be but not sure. Where I do have problems with the HP Recovery Disks I thought it would be better to do an image. Maybe I am wrong. My best solution is to get a MS CD and I am waiting for Vista SP1 for that. It seems to me there are still a lot of problems with the RTM.
