| Classic Start Menu We have a workstation running on Windows XP Professional SP2, connected to a Windows SBS 2003 server. There are 4 users using 4 different accounts with this workstation. All of them prefer using the usual Start Menu, instead of the Classic Start menu. Unfortunately, ONE of the users' Start Menu kept "sticking to" the Classic menu. We tried changing it to the normal menu, but after 2 or 3 days, it will go back to the Classic Start menu. The other users do not experience this issue. Is there any way to stop this? Thank you. |

| Re: Classic Start Menu If it was affecting all users then I would say a policy setting being pushed out but then again it would take effect when that user logged in. So, it seems that something is changine the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive for that individual user. What if you re-created their profile. Does the issue go away? Try the following first: START | RUN | Type 'regedit' & press ENTER Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer Create the DWORD value: NoSimpleStartMenu Values: XP Start Menu: 0 Classic Start Menu: 1 Restart your computer & ask that user to logon again. Problem solved or not? -- SPAMCOP User "wrytat" <wrytat@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D31EE18A-1500-4753-B51B-AD603BA8E125@microsoft.com... > We have a workstation running on Windows XP Professional SP2, connected to > a > Windows SBS 2003 server. | Re: Classic Start Menu I think "SPAMCOP user" meant to say the value should be 0 [zero] and not 1 like he actually stated (a small oversight I think) IF you are wanting the XP style start menu and NOT the CLASSIC one. SO: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware\Microsoft\Windows\Curren tVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoSimpleStartMenu"=dword:00000000 Also, a simpler way might be to 'force' the XP (not classic) start menu on the machine in question via the Group Policy Editor found on the 'Administrative Tools' menu. Open the GPO editor and navigate to this setting: Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar ....then within this 'folder' there is a setting: "Force Classic Start Menu" and set it to 'disabled' This will force the system to display the Start Menu in the new XP style no matter what else was set and force it to stay that way. == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "wrytat" <wrytat@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D31EE18A-1500-4753-B51B-AD603BA8E125@microsoft.com... > We have a workstation running on Windows XP Professional SP2, connected to > a > Windows SBS 2003 server. | Re: Classic Start Menu Tim, Force Classic Start Bar to disabled. By default it is NOT CONFIGURED meaning not set Also, in my original reply I said if you have XP Pro you can set the policy otherwise you cannot except by making a registry entry You are doing the policy setting as the local machine, but if part of the domain then you need to use USER COMFIGURATION... Why do you use the old Regedit4? We are no longer using Windows 98... so it should be changed to: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 Of course it still works with Regedit4 but technically it's not the old FAT (95/98) versions of Windows any longer. If you want to split hairs saying you can install XP as FAT then yes, you can but why would you want to? -- SPAMCOP User "Tim Meddick" <timmeddick@gawab.com> wrote in message news:uB5z5jM1JHA.1900@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >I think "SPAMCOP user" meant to say the value should be 0 [zero] and not 1 >like he actually stated (a small oversight I think) IF you are wanting the >XP style start menu and NOT the CLASSIC one. > > SO: > > REGEDIT4 > [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware\Microsoft\Windows\Curren tVersion\Policies\Explorer] > "NoSimpleStartMenu"=dword:00000000 > > Also, a simpler way might be to 'force' the XP (not classic) start menu > on the machine in question via the Group Policy Editor found on the > 'Administrative Tools' menu. | Re: Classic Start Menu SPAMCOP User, In your original reply you extolled the OP to set this registry value: >HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer > >create the DWORD value: NoSimpleStartMenu > >Values: > > XP Start Menu: 0 > Classic Start Menu: 1 .... but my point was this that you quoted was going to make the system SHOW the CLASSIC start menu and that is NOT what the OP wanted, which WAS the new XP style menu. Plus, I don't recognise those particular values and question their validity. I merely clarified the situation by quoting: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftware\Microsoft\Windows\Curren tVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoSimpleStartMenu"=dword:00000000 ....plus, if it's hair splitting you want, what else is it when you point out the 'error' of using the outdated 'REGEDIT4' following your statement by admitting it still works!! If it functions in XP then why are you criticizing just for the sake of it?! AND I don't care about the default state for the value I quoted, I merely said that setting it to 'disabled' (manually or) through GPO editor will FORCE the XP style menu (what the OP wants) and NOT the CLASSIC one. Lastly, you say "but if part of the domain then you need to use USER ONFIG" - there is no equivalent 'Start Menu' setting in User Configuration ONLY in 'Computer Configuration' within the Group Policy Editor. == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "SPAMCOP User" <spamcop_user@no_mail.haha> wrote in message news:uzVtv8R1JHA.1420@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > Tim, > > Force Classic Start Bar to disabled. | Re: Classic Start Menu Tim, When you are on the domain. Check the Default Domain Policy & then tell me that there is no equivalent? I install servers daily & usually set this value in the GPO If you don't have access to a 2003 R2 or 2008 R2 domain controller then check Technet -- SPAMCOP User "Tim Meddick" <timmeddick@gawab.com> wrote in message news:e6kIPcS1JHA.6056@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > SPAMCOP User, > In your original reply you extolled the OP to > set this registry value: > >>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Policies\Explorer >> >>create the DWORD value: NoSimpleStartMenu >> >>Values: >> >> XP Start Menu: 0 >> Classic Start Menu: 1 > > ... but my point was this that you quoted was going to make the system > SHOW the CLASSIC start menu and that is NOT what the OP wanted, which WAS > the new XP style menu. | Re: Classic Start Menu Do you not have any answers for the rest of it? I may have got it wrong about the setting in domains, I'll have to check that when I'm at work. However, there is no equivalent setting in 'User Configuration' on my own machine - which is not part of a domain, I admit. == Cheers, Tim Meddick, Peckham, London. :-) "SPAMCOP User" <spamcop_user@no_mail.haha> wrote in message news:OLyjXnS1JHA.4520@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > Tim, > > When you are on the domain.
