Power Outage (Ice Storm) has whacked my OS (XP)! Help!

When the lights came back on, the HP message on monitor read, "Disk Boot
Failure. Insert system disk and press ENTER." I don't have a 'System' Disc,
but do have the system backup disc my HP recommended I create when I first
set it up. Nothing works, however. After doing a two minute 'tapping'
exercise (sound coming from HD), the same message comes back. Bottom line:
my machine will not BOOT!! Any suggestions? (I'm using a secondary computer
to generate this message)

Quite common for electrical storms to zap motherboards and hard drives.
You could try taking out the hard drive from the computer you are using now
and putting it into the dead computer. If it does not boot it sounds like
your motherboard fried. If it does boot then your hard drive maybe fried.
I am thinking maybe it is the hard drive as if its the motherboard I doubt
you would even get as far as that message. Thankfully, your power supply is
still in tact.
What happens when you insert your system CD/DVD, do you get any error with
those? Are you able to boot from the CD into windows setup?

Send it in for repair. It's a hardware problem, not an XP OS issue.

Sounds like the Click of Death to me. Hard drive is fried.

Re: Power Outage (Ice Storm) has whacked my OS (XP)! Help!

b4 you scrap you hard drive, may want to try this

IF IDE----
with power off remove c drive and install it as a slave on you 2nd pc ( if
both pc have disk formats that match ). --

If the 2nd pc power up with the other drive run chkdsk on it and scandisk (
sometime one will work with some errors better then the other ? )
if the 2nd pc can't boot up with the other hard drive you may have a
defective hard drive or pc can't boot with this drive install.
if you have a usb to ide adapter this would be a good time to use it...
after 2nd pc goes into windows plug this the drive into the usb port, see
what happens

sata

plug into high sata port ( not 1 or 0 other pc may try to boot from it ) if
its work run chkdsk and scandisk.

if that did not work look in you mb manual and see if you can plug into your
sata port ( hot ) while pc is on. If so try it if you can run chkdsk and
scandisk.

PS chkdsk X:/f/v sub x for hard drive, the " f " sw for fix , "v" sw
give more details on info . As a last resort is you can't fix it with chkdsk
or scandisk try to format it..

Re: Power Outage (Ice Storm) has whacked my OS (XP)! Help!

Couple of points: Xp does not have scandisk. chkdsk /v is not available
for ntfs. Hot plugging will only make things worse.

Hard drive is making clicking noises after a major power outage. It's
borked. This is called the click of death.

At any rate, the controller is fried. Or the controller on the
motherboard is fried. To separate the two, disconnect the data cable
(leave power) if it still clicks, it's the hard drive controller. If
not, it's the computer (or data cable).

If you TRULY have data you want to salvage, do not attempt to format
it. You may be able to recover data by finding another ABSOLUTELY
identical hard drive, and borrow the controller board from it. Or seek
a professional data recovery service.

Reply to Power Outage (Ice Storm) has whacked my OS(XP)! Help!:
Check if a diskette is inserted in your diskette drive.
If yes, remove the diskette and hit enter.
That should solve the problem

Looks like you may need a new HD. You should also seriously look into
getting an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). To recover your existing
files you may be able to "slave" the drive that you have in the system now
(Look on the internet for how to set up a master/slave setup for hard
drives).
