What is the maximum file size created by XP backup? I try to run a backup to
an external HD, and the backup always seems to fail at about 4.8 gig.

Probably at 4GB, not 4.8. The problem has nothing to do with the maxuimum
file size created by NTBackup. You are trying to exceed the maximum file
size you can have on a FAT32 volume. Reformat the drive as NTFS, and the
problem will go away.

is your external HDD formatted to FAT32? If so the max file size is only
4GB.....

Nothing you need to worry about: Theory: 16 exabytes minus 1 KB;
Implementation: 16 terabytes minus 64 KB.

In either case, much larger than the size of the drive either of us have.
