msconfig and services.msc -- Help for a slow pc

Hi,
Windows XP SP2
VERY slow pc.
Been slow all its life but now is worse. (HP Pavillion with its original
software)

Is it safe to disable ctfmon?

Also there are a lot of processes in the windows file service.msc and I
don't know whether the warnings are really accurate (for example changing
from automatic to manual?)

Finally I realize that ccApp is a symantec file but can I adjust something
to make it load less (after startup) via windows xp (SP2)

I do disc cleanup and browser and email cache cleaning almost daily.

Thanks

First off..

Uninstall Norton 'what ever it is', and install Avast 4Home anti-virus..

www.avast.com

Next..

Spyware removal.. what you will need to download..

Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/

... And how to use it

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial43.html

SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

... And how to use it..

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial49.html

Malwarebytes..

http://www.malwarebytes.org

If you install and run Spybot first, it will automatically remove as many
Temporary Internet Files as it can. This is a good thing because they take
forever to check. Running Malwarebytes after Spybot will shorten the scan
time down considerably..

You don't mention specs for your computer, but if it has only 256mb RAM
installed, buy another 256mb memory module and install it..

Re: msconfig and services.msc -- Help for a slow pc

slow performance can
be attributed by numerous
things that include software
and/or hardware.

as one example,

if you are running any hp
software that is included
with windows and system,

then your machine is wasting
many resources running poorly
written software that is otherwise
junk.

you won't miss anything by
uninstalling such software
and replacing it/them with
other freeware

----------------

however, there is a simple
way to analyze performance
issues.

boot up to safe mode
and see if performance
is improved in this mode.

Re: msconfig and services.msc -- Help for a slow pc

How much memory does it have? For Windows XP to work decently it requires
512mb minimum. You say it was slow from new and this could be you major
problem.
