text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

XP tries to help me highlight text by grabbing whole words and jumping across
spaces and such. It's particularly annoying when I'm trying to copy html code
and it grabs "><" and won't let go. It will even grab backwards from where I
start the cursor and add a bunch of junk to what I'm trying to highlight....
It's ALWAYS getting in my way. It rarely "helps" and usually grabs what I
don't need and doesn't grab what I do need. I've noticed some programs are
worse than others, so maybe it's not an XP thing... Is there any way to shut
off the whole bizarre grabby highlighting behavior thing so that I can just
take what I want? I REALLY don't need help to highlight text....jeez....

I've never seen this on any of my XP machines, nor on any of my clients'
machines. You've got something set that has nothing to do with the standard
operating system settings. Perhaps you have something set in Accessibility
Options?

If not, did this behavior always occur? If not, what changed between the
time things worked and the time they didn't?

Yes, this is not a XP thing. Find a better text editor.

I take it you use Microsoft Word? :-) word does to me exactly what you
described... its not XP.

Yeah, its a pain in the ass. I doesn't bother me enough to complain
about it or look for a solution thought. Maybe theres some settings you
can alter in word?

WinXP, as an operating system, has no such capability, that I can find.
What specific application are you using to edit HTML files? Have you
read that applications Help files or look at its options? Microsoft
Office applications, for instance, have the option to select the entire
word, or not, when high-lighting.

Re: text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

Hi All,

It happens on ALL of my XP machines. It's most annoying in Internet Explorer
(6) and Photoshop, but I use them most. For instance, when I go to save a
file and get the little dialog box with the previous filename and want to
adjust the name and save as "-1" as an example. When I click on the name to
change it selects the whole thing, then a second click selects a chunk of it,
a third click gives me a blinking cursor and I can do my thing. My 2 main
PC's are an HP laptop with XP installed from purchase, the other is a desktop
box I put together from parts. Both are running XP Pro. I just went into IEX
and tried to select some text, the same text, on the same web page on both
computers. It's a line of text links at the bottom of the page. It grabs junk
ahead of me as I move the cursor. This is just a single example... I work
with these things and I waste a lot of time trying to get around it. No weird
setting in anything in control panel, the only thing comon to both machines
is a logitech mouse, two different versions but both made by logitech.

Re: text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

Thanks, but it's on all of mine. Right now I'm sitting in front of an HP
laptop and a desktop box I put together myself. Both are running XP Pro with
all the curreent updates. It happens a lot in most programs I use, like
Internet Explorer and Photoshop. The save file dialog box in Photoshop is the
reason I'm complaining right now, it takes 3 clicks to get a cursor in the
file name. First I get the whole line, then I get a chunk of the filename,
then I finally get a cursor. I'm working on 500 images and making 3 different
copies of each, so it's a pain... IEX is also particularly bad, I'm running 6
still but it's the latest version. No odd settings in control panel, I went
there first.... As long as I can remember it's always been that way. Some
programs are better than others, but I assumed they were designed that way
and that the monkey might be the default, especially since IEX is "broken"...

Re: text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

My editors are fine for the most part, it's Internet Explorer and Photoshop
and other programs when I'm doing things like saving a file. The dialog box
that pops up for the filename takes 3 clicks to get a cursor. First it grabs
the whole thing, then it grabs a chunk, then it gives me a cursor and I can
work. I'm working on about 500 images, making 3 copies of each, and it's like
having a chimp jumping on the keyboard while I'm working... No odd settings
in control panel, and it does it on both computers on my desk, an HP laptop
and a desktop box I put together. Both are running XP Pro with the latest
updates....

As I and others said to you before, this is not a function of the XP
operating system. Since it occurs on both your computers, the phenomenon
must be coming from something *you've* set. In my first reply to you, I
asked you to check in Accessibility Options to see if something has
inadvertently been selected there. Please do this. If anything at all is on
in that area, turn it off.

We use Logitech mice but the only one running any Logitech software is on XP
and I don't believe there is any option for selection highlighting, but it
would not hurt to check.

You could also try changing your theme from whatever it is set to currently.
I'm sorry not to have more specific advice for you, but without looking at
your machine it is hard to know what you've done. And this *is* something
you've done because this is most definitely not normal behavior for this
operating system.

Re: text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

Thanks, but I don't use Word. My editors are fine mostly, I do a lot of
programming and use text only editors. They seem to know how to allow text
highlighting. I have trouble in Internet Explorer and programs like Photoshop
when I'm saving files and want to adjust the filename in the dialog box that
pops up, so I assumed it was an XP thing... Like this text box I'm typing in
right now, as I select text it jumps ahead and grabs more for me. Which I
don't always want......

Sounds to me like the mouse is being moved while the click is being
performed.

Re: text highlighting works like a monkey on a fruitcake

The mouse is probably causing you problems.
Place the cursor.
Hold down the Shift key.
Click where you want the highlight to end.
