Iolo System Mechanic 7

I ran System Mechanic 7. Now, in Add or Remove Programs, the names have
disappeared and there are wierd icons or numbers. Please can anyone tell me
how to get the names back as I can't tell which program I want to delete.

Contact the Author of that badware and tell them to fix your problem.

Re: Iolo System Mechanic 7

if anyone is unable to
access any features in
normal mode, then safe mode
is an alternative to safely regain
some control over the o.s.

likely, there is a need to uninstall
the program he mentioned via the
method he mentioned...

but you already knew this....

Re: Iolo System Mechanic 7

Is there an "Undo" feature in the Iolo program? Did the program create
a backup before it damaged your Windows installation. Can you restore
the backup? If not try System Restore.

This is one of the reasons why techs (like me) don't recommend using
registry cleaners.

1. If System Mechanic has an "undo" feature, use it.
2. If System Mechanic doesn't have an "undo, try a System Restore to before
you ran System Mechanic.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore
"Restore my computer to an earlier time"

If that doesn't work, contact System Mechanic 7 tech support for help with
their program. Then don't use system cleaners like this again.

Re: Iolo System Mechanic 7

Thanks John. There is a facility to undo what it did, and I tried that, then
removed System Mechanic so probably the backup has gone as well. I have tried
System Restore several times, but it just says there have been no changes
made.

Get some control of what? He can't see anything in Add/Remove because he
ran a registry cleaner that messed things up. How is booting into safe mode
going to help him get some control?

See Malke's reply for a reasoned response to the OP's issue.

I'm sorry to hear that. You have three things to try, but back up your data
first before doing anything else.

1. Use the System File Checker. Start>Run>sfc /scannow [enter]
Have your XP cd handy. I don't have a lot of faith that this will fix
things, but it's an easy first step and if it works - great.

2. If #1 is no good, do a Repair Install:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

3. If the Repair Install doesn't work, then I'm afraid you've damaged your
operating system files too badly and you'll need to do a Clean Install:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...alling_Windows - What
you will need on-hand

After all the dust has settled, what will you never use again? All together
now my loves: no more registry cleaners!

Seriously, lots of people have used registry cleaners and swear by them.
Many more people wind up swearing *because* of them. They are simply not
needed in XP.

Use the System Restore function to revert to the Restore Point you
created before running System Mechanic. Failing that, you might try
contacting the software's maker and asking them how to undo the damage
their product causes.

they are advertised via google profusely.

I puchased this piece of garbage from Best Buy, hoping to resolve some
problems I was having with the underperforming HP desktop I bought
last December. I thought the AMD dual core processor would be an
improvement over my 2 yr old laptop. I saw no difference, in fact the
laptop is more reliable.
According to the advertising on the cover Iolo's product has one many
awards and is also a virus protector and firewall. I had to turn off
the firewall, now the virus protector gives me an error message at
startup. I turned on the windows firewall and every now and then get a
message that I have no firewall on.
How do these people get away with it? I will never buy anything from
Best Buy again after this, nor HP.
One hilarious feature of this program, it tells you that you have a
critical error in that there are some files to clean up. First of all
that should not be a critical error, they are just Internet Cache
files etc. Second, if you click on "remove" it starts removing, then
gets to say 39% done and the program hangs ROFL! One time I had to do
a hard reboot to get the computer to start up again, sometimes you
click on the System Mechanic icon and nothing happens. In that case I
had to reinstall the program, probably losing one of the 3 licences it
comes with. Oh and by the way after reanalyzing the computer those few
hundred megabytes come back again as a critical problem to resolve.
Of course I contacted technical help and they sent me a link to their
FAQS etc. which I had already looked at. Then I had to email them
again and am still waiting for a response.
I blame the people who give these programs awards, and then Best Buy
and others for not looking into it. You can't return opened software
so they should make sure they are not selling dud programs like Sys
Mechanic 7.
