Runtime Error in XP when opening a folder containing an .avi file

XP, SP2

When I open a folder that contains an .avi file, without even clicking
on the icon, I get a "Runtime Error! - Program:
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe."

This doesn't happen with every .avi file folder that I try to open, but
it can get really obnoxious when it does.

Sometimes, in a folder containing an .avi file, when I click
VIEW>THUMBNAILS, I get the same error message.

In the error report window, when I click to see the data that this
particular error code contains I get the following error signature:

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: avisplitter.ax
ModVer: 1.0.0.7 Offset: 000284d2

Does anybody out there know the cause of this problem and if there's a
remedy?

See if running this edit on Kelly's site helps:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 74: AVI Search Remove

See the top of the page for info on running the edit.

Try what Rock said. If that does not help, see if uninstalling the avisplitter.ax Codec helps.

Thanks, I tried that before I made my initial post and unfortunately
the file to restore avi search isn't available for download.

I've tried uninstalling AviSplitter.ax also and the problem remains.

Re: Runtime Error in XP when opening a folder containing an .avi file

UPDATE: I downloaded and installed the Combined Community Codec Pack
from http://www.cccp-project.net/ and everything appears to be working
fine. I can open folders with certain .avi files and view other .avi
files as thumbnail without getting a runtime error.

I still don't know how or why this problem started, but I sure am glad
to have found a suitable workaround.
