What is Windows Genuine Advantage plug-in? Do I need it? I use Firefox as a browser if that makes any difference.

It's in your IE so you can download programs like Defender, IE7 and
WMP11. It is also necessary if you want to get your updates at Windows
Updates.

I read what it said on MSoft's web site but I was looking for an impartial
opinion. I guess the consensus is that it can't do any harm, correct?

You may be concerned with "Genuine Advantage Notification" which
is the second level component. The Genuine Advantage Validation
tool is a small ActiveX component (Version 1.5.723.1) that loads into
\Windows\Downloaded Program Files

You can always validate and simply navigate to that folder and Right
Click the entry and choose "Remove". Next time you wish to download
an Advantage only component you'll have to reinstall the Active-X code.
However, if your license is OK then it hurts nothing to leave it in place.

fine with it. My opinion is if you have a genuine copy of XP, then it's not
