Monitor losing signal in dual monitor set up

I am running XP Pro SP2 using two graphic cards Nvidia 7900GTX Main and
7800GTX Second. The main monitor looses signal and tho I can continue working
on the second monitor for a few minutes I cannot do a shut down and
ultimately have to hit the power button for a hard shutdown. This happens for
no apparent reason. My drivers are the same on both and up to date. Sometimes
the second monitor looses signal, but not as often. I have run a tune up with
Live One Care and done a bug check with PC Bug Doctor. I am running Office
2007, Explorer 7, and WMP11. There is no warning or error message. It just
goes blank and then the monitor shows “DVI No Signal. It happens with many
different apps and sometime with no apps. Usually it crashes if it sits a
while without use. Sometime it goes hours without happening, other times it
happens up to 5 times in an hour. I have changed the both monitors, but that
made no difference. I check the temp on both GPUs 1 is running at around 45
and the other 55 so heat shouldn't be an issue. I do not know what else to do
other than a complete reformat and start form the beginning. Any thoughts??

Ron

Re: Monitor losing signal in dual monitor set up

If I understand you corrrectly, you are running two monitors with one on
each card. This you cannot do. You must run both monitors on the same card,
and use Nvidia's Twinview applet to setup both monitors.

If you are running an SLI configuration, both cards must be of the same
type, not a 7800 and a 7900 like you have; simply because they run at
different core and memory speeds.

Re: Monitor losing signal in dual monitor set up

Sorry to jump in here but I have a similar problem, I am using a KVM switch.
All of a sudden I can not switch between the both, I get a NO SIGNAL on the
screen for one of them and the other is fine. I also have another setup with
two other computers using a KVM switch and they run and switch fine. wonder
if my video card has failed on the first setup I described. I have moved the
KVM cable around and the other computer does just fine. I wonder whats going
on.
Thks,

Re: Monitor losing signal in dual monitor set up

DandyDon,
I find this very interesting as my system was set up by Falcon NW. I
purchased the system with only the 7800, but with the intent of running two
Apple 30" LCDs I was instructed by the tech support there to purchase another
GPU and they recommended the 7900. Then when I couldn't get the second
monitor to work, tech support helped me set it up and get the drivers
updated. I am going to forward you responce to tech support at Falcon. I
never did get the second apple 30" as I did not like the screen so I sold the
Apple and purchased two Gateway 24", but that shouldn't matter other than the
7800 would not run two Apples. I will try to run both 24s off the 7900 and
see what happens. Note it does work well until it crashes. Thanks for the
help.

Ron
