To Open Windows Media Player.!!!!!?????

I've received some advice on Configuring WMP.Am using XP/PRO.In win/98
one used to Open same as it was listed in > Start-Prog's-Accessories
..Have been to Windows Media folder.no luck. Where's good old Win/98
!!!?? Please. jim

Trying to put these suggestions into effect:-

If WMP is not associated with mp3 files, open WMP and click "Tools >
Options" on the menu bar. Click the "File Types" tab and select the file
types you want associated with WMP. When finished with your selections
click Apply > Ok.

If you only want to play a file and do not want to associate mp3's with
WMP, open WMP and click "File > Open" on the menu bar. Click the
dropdown arrow of the Lookin box, browse to the file you wish to play,
select it and click Open. Or Right click on the file you want to open in
WMP and click "Open With" in the popup menu. Click WMP in the popout
menu. If WMP is not listed, click "Choose Program" in the popout menu.
Scroll to and select WMP. Make sure "Always use the selected
program...." is unchecked if you don't want to permanently associated it
with WMP. Click Ok.

Thanks Heaps Brian, for your Comprehensive Reply. Regards. jim

Are you saying that WMP is not installed?
If it is installed, the executable file should be in C:\Program Files\Windows
Media Player. If so, there should also be a shortcut to it in "Start >
Programs".

If it is installed and there is no shortcut to it, you can create a shortcut
to it in the Programs menu, on the Desktop, in Quicklaunch or all three.

If it is not installed:
Click "Start > Settings > Control Panel".
Double click the "Add or Remove Programs" applet.
Once opened and the list is populated, on the left side click "Add/Remove
Windows Components".
In the Windows Components Wizard window scroll down to Windows Media Player and
select it.
Click Next and follow any prompts to finish.

What happens exactly when you try to validate? Please provide any message as
is when attempting to validate.
Was WMP ever installed and working properly? If yes, it may be worth a shot to
uninstall/reinstall via Add/Remove Programs. However be aware that you may be
prompted to insert the XP install disk to proceed, have it on hand just in case.

On another note, go to Windows Update to see if it's available to download.
If it is, will it download/install or do you get the same authentication issue?

You may also want to ask this question in a WMP ng for a possible resolution
if it is a known issue.
